Navy men are professional and courageous fighters but outside of navy, they screw-up and quit?

As the Singapore Navy celebrated its 50th anniversary and commissioned a new warship, PM Lee paid tribute to the men and women in the navy.
“We needed a strong maritime force to protect our sovereignty, defend us from seaborne threats, and keep trade – our lifeblood – flowing,” he said. “So at Telok Ayer Basin on this day 50 years ago, we created the Singapore Naval Volunteer Force.”

“We sent midshipmen abroad to Britain, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, to train and gain operational experience. They worked hard to build and modernise the navy. They acquired and passed down the art of sea-faring and the skills and discipline of seamen,” he added.

PM Lee noted how the navy is now “a fighting force including submarines, frigates, maritime patrol aircraft and unmanned vessels and aircraft” and “professional and courageous fighting men and women, who have been tested in real operations”.

“(It is now) a navy that is admired at home and respected beyond our shores,” he proudly said.

Quitters and screw-ups

However, these “professional and courageous fighting” navy men seem to screw-up and quit when faced with adversities working outside the navy.

For example, the former Chief of Navy (1999–2003), Lui Tuck Yew, join politics after 2006 GE and later became the Minister of Transport. In Aug 2015, just prior to 2015 GE, he announced his retirement and quit politics, after incurring public wrath on the many breakdowns encountered in the MRT services.

In his letter to PM Lee, he confirmed his reasons for quitting: “It is with deep regret that I confirm my decision not to stand for re-election in the coming (2015) General Election. I broached this subject with you early this year. You and several senior members of the Cabinet tried hard to persuade me to change my mind,” RADM Lui wrote.

“You reminded me that the responsibility of Government was a collective one, and no minister carried difficult problems like public transport alone. I deeply appreciate the reassurance and support. But having thought the matter over carefully, I have decided that I should stand by my original decision (to quit)”.

He particularly highlighted 2 major MRT disruptions in his letter, “But we have had some setbacks, including two major disruptions on the NSEW (North-South East-West) lines. Large-scale or prolonged disruptions still happen more frequently than is acceptable.”

“We have embarked on major upgrades and initiated further efforts in the last quarter to identify additional areas that need systematic renewal and strengthen overall maintenance practices. Given the nature and scale of our rail network, these improvements will take time,” he added.

Another Navy Chief resigned from public service

Another former Chief of Navy (2007–2011), Chew Men Leong, also resigned from public service, after incurring the wrath of taxi drivers. After leaving the navy, RADM Chew was posted to become CEO of PUB from 2011 to 2014. He was subsequently appointed as Chief Executive of LTA from 2014. He resigned from LTA last year, only about 2 years into the job.

During his term, he grappled with major MRT breakdowns, including the worst one in the MRT’s history on 7 Jul 2015 and another in Apr 2016 that crippled three MRT lines and an LRT line simultaneously.

Sources told ST that RADM Chew was facing mounting pressure arising partly from the persistent rail incidents.

Other incidents faced by Chew included the public outcry over the “secretive” returning of 26 defective trains to China for repairs. The incident was uncovered by a Hong Kong news team who tailed a night convoy of the defective Chinese trains from Bishan to Jurong Port, as the trains were prepared to be loaded to a ship bound for Qingdao, China.

Even a taxi driver wrote to The Independent to complain about Chew: “I will come to other blunders of LTA, under Chew’s charge,” wrote the taxi driver. “Implementing ‘Give Way’ to bus on exiting the bus stop, latest being ‘give-way’ to buses on the second lane of the busy road – Orchard Road. Singapore which has millions of foreigners who come to work/live in Singapore, might not be familiar with the road system in Singapore, as it is not common in other countries. This rule in fact poses a danger to all motorist and it is just a fatality waiting to happen.”

“MRT Trains, despite frequent breakdown of the trains and their systems, LTA is just busying finding fault with the company and ‘fines’ them. What is the root cause of all these problems? Was Chew bothered to find out? We doubt so, especially when MRT trains were secretly shipped back to China.”

“Having said so much, we are sad to hear him resign. But he will not be missed by all of us. Because of him, commuters, taxi drivers and the government are being embarrassed, inconvenienced and have decreased income,” the taxi driver quipped.

Currently, RADM Chew works as Deputy President, the number 2 person in ST Marine, which comes under ST Engineering.

Yet another Navy Chief screws up in public service

Finally we have RADM Ng Chee Peng, who was also a former Chief of Navy (2011–2014). He became the CEO of CPF Board in Mar 2015.

It was reported in Apr last month that some $1.7 million had been wrongly paid out in Medisave grants for newborns due to a processing error. Between March 2016 and January 2017, 885 children who obtained their citizenship after birth received between $1,000 and $3,000 more erroneously under the Medisave Grant for Newborns (MGN).

Children who are not citizens at birth but who obtained citizenship before the age of 2 are given pro-rated amounts. Apparently, they were given more due to a “processing error”.

This incident happened under the watch of RADM Ng as boss of CPF Board.

Navy men are professional and courageous fighters

That is absolute bs. These are all only scholars, not navy men by vocation. They are there only for the scholarship and the pay, not the job.

When they are put to the real test, like when they have to face real enemies, even tame ones like those in the Little India riots, they will shiver in their pants and run away. Absolutely no difference from the scholar commanders in the Little India riot.

Remember, they are all only scholars. Not one of them is a soldier or a policeman or a navy man.

    You over-rated his motives.

Before the GE2011 results actually came in, all the signs and surveys pointed out to a great upheaval in the results, what with massive discontent with the PAP among the electorate, with a real possibility that the PAP would be defeated in the GE. The actual results caught everyone by surprise, including the PAP.

So he thought it was better to jump ship before being thrown overboard.

Know how all these so-called scholars MFs attained and obtained their pinnacle positions as Indian Chiefs?

Army: as scholars, their fiacking stink in the army involved mainly on THEORY rather than EXPERIENCING ACTUAL real warfare in war torn countries around the world. Most of these jokers actually don’t assemble and fire a REAL weapon(rifle, rocket launcher, etc). That’s why all these MFs are called PAPER GENERALS!

Navy: same principles applied to all these navy so-called top guns. Spend most of their time on LAND doing computer stimulated stunt and manoeuvre rather than spending MOST of their time with subordinates onboard the navy boat riding the rough seas! That’s why they are called REAR Admiral….. calling all the shots and BShitting from the REAR(land)!

Police: same principles also applied to all the MIB so-called top guns. Spend most of their time doing so-called strategic planning in their Cosy office without EXPERIENCING or WITNESSING REAL BIG SCALE rioting incident that happen frequently in other countries! Btw the Little India riot incident is small beer and yet the Indian Chief just hid behind his men clueless while watching police cars and ambulances Kenna burned and overturned!
