Learning from Israel

Ditching the ex generals (combat not paper) who turned politicians and political leaders and turning to successful tech entrepreneurs to run the country (see extract from Economist below).

Err there’s a problem. The last (and only) successful tech entrepreneur was one Sim Mong Hoo (Remember him?).

Err what about turning to successful CEOs or other senior managers (not failed ones like Tan Jee Say) from the real private sector, not from the pseudo ones? Err any around living here?

From Economist

For over half a century, the Israel Defence Forces’ high command was a breeding-ground for Israel’s political leaders. The first of dozens of retired generals to enter politics was Moshe Dayan, less than two years out of uniform, in 1959: he went on to serve as defence minister and as foreign minister. Since then 11 of the 20 former chiefs of staff of the Israeli army have gone on to serve in the Knesset. Most reached senior ministerial positions; two, Yitzhak Rabin and Ehud Barak, became prime minister.

But Israeli politics has changed dramatically in recent years. The main parties’ leaders and candidate lists are no longer decided in smoke-filled rooms, but in party-wide primaries. Senior officers, used to having thousands of soldiers carry out their orders unquestioningly, are ill-equipped for the media circus and patient lobbying that accompanies political advancement …

the high-tech entrepreneurs are now the shining Israeli success story and it could be their moment.” They also have independent sources of income to finance glitzy primary campaigns. But they also have a lot to lose. “We succeeded in business by detaching ourselves from the old establishment and learning a new way of doing things. Going into politics means taking on that establishment again,” says Mr Margalit. Only a few have braved the waters so far; more might make for new ways of thinking about economic problems like poor labour participation rates and political ones such as the deadlock in the occupied territories.

A scholar system produce WORLD RECORD AND WORLD HIGHEST salaries for public servants.

That’s one thing we know for a fact.

Another fact is, since the beginning of human civilisation, the greatest are almost always non-scholars.

This suggests that no matter how good a scholar is, chances are we are not getting the best man for the job.

Amos took on the establishment in US court and won big-time. He is definitely a winner, not a loser. If he won who lost? Who do you think? Hint: They like to wear white. :-)

Yitzhak Rabin, Ehud Barak & Moshe Dayan have never eaten XO CHAI TOW KUAY or danced Kee Chiu on the stage or bought votes with lolly. They only enter politics by the front door in multi-party elections – never the backside or backdoor entry route.

    This article is nonsensical writing.

This Govt have had it good, are accustomed and comfortable; very, very comfortable indeed at being the master, ruler, dictator and teacher …….. all rolled into one.

Expect them to wanna learn and concede that they have erred in their ways …….. not in a million dollars, oops, I meant years !!!

As in my previous posting, the writing is on the wall and the ink that wrote it, is dry and permanent. Change will not take place, Singaporeans have neither the fight nor sight for it. They are a unique breed, content and ever prepared to play the role of the minnow ………. ever willingly, and they are ok with it.

So please do not shed a tear nor skip a heartbeat for them. They know what they want ……… and they have it !!!

  • riot cowards vs war heroes:

There’s a stark difference between the Israeli Generals and the SG paper Generals.

First of all, our paper Generals (Corporals or Sergeants would be more apt descriptions) were promoted to the ranks of Generals by their scholar Civil Servants peers whose only criteria for selection to any position in the Civil Service, including the Armed Forces and the GLCs, is based solely on their past exam grades, and more concretely, on the scholarship they won when they were 18 years old and which was based solely on their ability to ace the exams rather their ability to think critically or their innate talent for anything else, which is notably absent, other than performing well in the exams.

We all know that SG students devote an extremely disproportionate and insane amount of time and energy and resources including tuition into regurgitatiing the textbooks for the exams.

PAP leaders unable to envision: If the number of the so-called scholars we produce are able to think as critically, or are able to have as many good scientific papers published, or produce high-tech companies quoted on NASDAQ as prolifically as the Israelis, we will need all the grads we can produce.

  • riot cowards vs war heroes:

    … cont

The Israeli Generals were truly courageous military men and many were war heroes who truly stepped out to serve and to defend their country, not coward bookworms like ours who were only attracted to the uniform for the scholarship dangled and the incredible and easy pay and comfortable lifestyle that the PAP Civil Servants are so generous with when it comes to paying themselves with tax payers’ money.

No hard life or the need to compete like if they were thrown into the lion’s den of market competition, and need to really perform.

You could see that these scholar commanders only dared to venture out dressed unidentifiable mufti and remained a safe distance away from a few unarmed-with-lethal-weapons and unprotected foreign worker rioters and watched on while they overturned and burned our Police vehicles right in front of their noses?

It is also no wonder that they have been outwitted by everyone in just about everything they dabble in when they are parachuted the quasi-private sector such as our GLC’s.

how come outwitted by everyone: The investment game is a zero sum game. It means when those so-called PAP scholar dimwits lose $100b or $200b, it means someone else got away with $100b or $200b, or got off saving a loss of $100b or $200b.

How come they were outwitted by everyone and in everything they dabble in? Didn’t they claim they are the most talented and pay themselves the highest salaries in the world?

The Israeli Generals were natural leaders who stepped out to lead and to serve their country. Ours, by contrast, did not step up on their own but rather, were ‘invited’ by the PAP to be a leader.

Which one amongst the current crop of PAP leaders stepped up on their own to lead? Can any one name us one PAP leader by invitation who has the slightest iota of charisma?

the difference between our paper-general$ n the israeli generals is that our generals speak with arrogance whilst the israeli generals speak with authority gained from hardened experience.

To Marbowling……is that why together with scholar CP NJH, both were ousted from the SPF after the CI was over?
As expected the CI covered them even praising them somewhat but behind the scene Govt chased them out.
Both did not take an active leading roles although they were at the scene. NJH was not even in uniform giving excuse he was on official leave. Aren’t cops esp Sr officers supposed to be on 24hrs duty when required in grave emergencies? The CP in uniform could have inspired and emboldened the ground cops significantly had he taken the lead. If only! Now they are in cold storage and totally unheard of nowsaday. Hope the current CP HWT with only a basic U degree can and will do a better job! I think he has already done so after 2 years. Best wishes to Mr Hoong!
    Peace be to all.
