Ban new foreign HR professionals?

I refer to the article “Why is a local PMET IT job posted in JobStreet’s Indonesia webportal?” (theonlinecitizen, May 16).

It states that “Editor’s note – Just last year, Singapore’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan said in a meeting with Indonesia’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Ms Retno Marsudi, “We believe Indonesian universities and technical institutes will produce many graduates with digital skills and we are thinking of launching a scheme, in which Singapore companies – which are looking for talent – will be able to recruit talent here, deploy them here, and provide services for the rest of the world,”

He also said in his statement that Singapore government intends to launch a scheme to help the Singapore companies to employ Indonesians.

Some had hypothesised that Indonesians will be recruited to Singapore to work, while some have defended the foreign minister by stating that the workers would not be employed by the companies to work in Singapore but “here” in Indonesia where Dr Vivian was making the statement at.

With this job advertisement of a job opening in Indonesia’s job portal, one would have to consider whether the proposed scheme in 2016 is going to “steal our lunches” instead of helping Singaporeans to steal “others lunch”.”

After talking to Terry Xu, Chief Editor of theonlinecitizen, which has done numerous stories on foreigners competing with Singaporeans for jobs, having made enquiries in Singapore, Asean and Asian countries – there is apparently some “funny things” going on in HR recruitment – leading to discrimination against Singaporeans.

There may now be an urgent need to ban any new foreigners from being hired as  new HR professionals in companies’ HR and recruitment agencies.

This issue seems to be borne out in the foreign workforce statistics as employment passes grew from 187,900 in December 2015 to 192,300 in December 2016, and S-Passes from 178,600 to 179,700.

How is it possible that in a period of worsening economic downturn and rising citizens’ unemployment rate – foreign PMETs have continued their relentless increase in the workforce, despite a National Jobs Bank that is supposed to be “Singaporeans first” in PMET jobs?

    NUS and NTU are among the highest-ranked schools in the world for software engineers according to QS World University Rankings. Not one Indonesian university is even in the top 500. Even if they volunteer to work for free, I would not hire any of them as long as there’s a local grad available.

    My niece worked in the HR. When her company was bought over by another company, she has to leave. For more than 2 years she couldn’t get back her HR job. When she finally did in one company, every time she saw foreign application, she put them aside. Having experienced discrimination before, it’s now “Singaporeans First” for her when she helps companies to recruit. This is the way to go to reclaim our sg.

    Jobs for Singaporeans First.

    If we can’t get the traitors from the Mafia In White to have “Singaporeans First”, then we the true sons and daughters of sg have to help each other, help our own fellow singaporeans. Banning foreign HR professionals is definitely the first step to doing so.

    Of course, they will hire and try to bring their buddies here. Safety in numbers.

    Indeed, is HR so rare a skillset that is lacking in Singaporeans that we have to source overseas? Can an expatriate fully understand the aspirations of our local born and bred? Do they appreciate our culture of family ties and obligation? Do they even know how to calculate CPF contributions? These foreigners are nothing but a fifth column diluting our national heritage by bringing in more of their foreign kind.

    I don’t know what the overall picture of how many Singaporeans are left in HR but it would not surprise me if we have become the minority just like in any other industry or department.

    When you have over 200k jobs for S and E pass holders is when you should know that PAP are just telling lies when they say the alien influx is being moderated. They can’t pretend to not know there was a recession from June 2015 onwards. And I’m positive that there were S and E pass holders whose permits were up for renewal last year.

    So instead of taking steps to reduce the number of non Singaporeans in the workforce we see an increase instead, how very peculiar.

    But this should not be a surprise coming from a government which constantly tells lies and does coverups.

Some foreign applicants really are better than local applicants whether you want to accept it or not.

    When majority of the jobs in sg went to foreigners, you think hiring in sg is still based on merit? Or nepotism basis? If it’s on merit, then sg’s education system surely needs an overhaul.

    Every employer expects to hire the better and best candidates. But the world is so big, who is the best? There’d always be someone better. So when the company is in sg, it has to give jobs to Singaporeans First! Until they can’t find the suitable ones, then they’re allowed to hire foreigners. Look at the huge influx of FTs in sg. All these FTs are doing the jobs singaporeans aren’t able to do? Really?

    Anyway, my niece says “put aside” not “throw inside (rubbish bins)”. It’s “Singporeans First” in SG!
