One Belt One Road: Singapore aping the West?

Is S’pore the West’s running dog on the issue of One Belt One Rd?

Let me explain.

Delegates from more than 100 countries, including Putin and 27 heads of state, attended Xi’s recent summit on One Belt One Rd.

Mr Najib’s long-scheduled trip to Beijing next week, following President Xi’s personal invitation to his One Belt One Road summit …

(FT last week)

Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Indonesia sent their leaders. Thailand may not have been invited. Why, I don’t know.

But Lawrence Wong represented S’pore. So our PM not invited isit? Why lidatt China?

Or, as is more likely, he was invited, but like many ang moh leaders, declined theinvitations to attend? Why liddat then PM? FT reports “that the largest economies in Asia and the west sent lower-level representatives.”

PM and PAP administration another bunch of amg moh tua kee wankers isit?

Looks like in S’pore, PAP and anti-PAP got plenty of ang moh tua kees. Aping the West is the in-thing among the PAPpists and anti-PAPpists.

And yet S’pore keeps saying it wants S’pore and S’porean to participate in the One Belt One Rd projects. Think China that stupid isit?

  • Simple Maths lah !!:

China can’t help it. They have no choice but to take care of their own first. They do not have the ability to help us, like the days of the USA, European and Japanese MNCs in SG, who in the 70s,80s created an entire middle and middle upper class of PMETs.

    Per Capital Income
    China : 14,160 PPP dollars
    US : 56,430 PPP dollars
    Japan : 38,870 PPP dollars
    UK : 40,550 PPP dollars

    Average Wage
China : “Consulting or professional service industries, including accounting, law and human resources, topped the ranks with an average (monthly) salary of 10,634 yuan (USD 18,518.04 per year), with the investment industry ranking second (9,204 yuan)…..”

US : “Workers age 25 and over without a high school degree had median weekly earnings of $519 at the end of 2016 compared with $698 for high school graduates. College graduates with at least a bachelor’s degree earned $1,270 per week.”

    Population
    China : 1.371 billion (2015)
    US : 321.4 million (2015)

Even with the many “roads and belts”, would they need you? Would they risk internal unrest by not letting their own have jobs first?

  • HARD TRUTH:

Let’s be very very frank. Why should Singapore be so enthusiastic about a project which may actually undermine the importance of Asean and this island port/airport way out on the edge of the Eurasian land mass? OK, we see what we can get out of investing in the building of the infrastructure. That’s all we can do. We don’t need to go overboard and say it is great for us. It is NOT.

And let’s be very very frank on another point. China’s real interest is not really South-east Asia. It is East Asia and all the territories stretching to the Middle East to Europe and Africa. This is the area, especially that bordering north of India an d Russia and the Middle Kingdom’s western end AND Korean peninsula and the South China Sea.

That is its big game scenario. We in Asean have to carve out our own role and existence.

Why Mr Najib goes , Mr LHL muz follow suit ?

We all know China is Najib’s ” creditor ” or a life line so he is compelled to . You know we know , many citizens of our neighbor knows … Speak to any of the neighbors you know lah. The 1MDB saga, 大马城 , …
Beside he may need further funds to inject in if not next coming election he may not be able to retain his seat ?

As for OROB , may i suggest for our part ( our country ) i prefer to we use our own monies instead of China funds. I dont think it’s good for us if they have a ” controlling stake” . Any way our part of the infrastructure is only a very small part. As for other countries with a big land mass will have no choice but ” make use ” of China’s fund and materials plus manpower.

    I second HARD TRUTH.

  • Rabble-rouser:

China’s “One Belt One Road” is an Economic Mutual Benefits Policy amongst Geo-political participants but is actually a disguised Strategic Political Alignment exercise. Like a Triad secret society gathering before the eventual gangland clash (WW3?), gang-members congregate to this gathering to see what ‘territories’ or what kinds of ‘businesses’ they’ll get if they were to join. Big Bro Ah Xi & Comrade Putin are putting together an interesting package to get those attending their ‘Ta Ker Ta’ or Big Brother Pow-Wow – to see whether if they would join their OBOR Triad to promote their alliance.
US Mafia Don Trump has problems of his own after firing his Mafia enforcer, sorry, FBI head, James Comey. He is facing a revolt from within his own party – Republicans shouting ‘IMPEACHMENT’ just only after 100 days in office. The Trump election promises like Tax reform, Drain the Swamp, Make America Great Again etc seemed so far away now! The end of TPPA did the US no favours as it confirmed the Anti-Globalization trend now in place.
The EU are also having their own problems since BREXIT & had only just dodged a bullet in the French elections with Macron & his much older spouse [..coach/ex-drama teacher] becoming the French President & his Old, sorry; First Lady over the firebrand & Far-Right National Front leader Marine Le Pen. And the EU house is in disarray – like a bickering once-wealthy family fallen on hard times, some EU members have spent all their inheritance & have now come back with palms open hoping to get some more. EU themselves are facing an Internal Security Crisis as Irregular Maritime Arrivals (IMA) flood Europe looking for handouts & charity! Once established, the migrants proceed to riot; rape their local women; drive trucks killing pedestrians while proclaiming Allah Akhbar!; plant bombs in Airports & proclaiming Allah Akhbar while pledging alliance to IS, etc.
It is quite easy to see why Political Leaders in other parts of the world are drawn to this OBOR initiate by Big Bro China. No open invitation to Xiao-Di LHL by Ta Ker Ah Xi is a slap on the face for disrespecting Ta Ker. Instead, Postman Lawrence Wong was summoned to take minutes & prescribed verbatim on the OBOR seminar event & report back to his now-disgraced chief to take note & beware! One Belt One Road for the favoured; but for S’pore – the End of the Road awaits & a Belting (flagellation – a flogging using a belt) for your troubles.

FYI. GIC (…those Generally Incompetent Clowns) had just lost US$4.0 BILLION (SG$5.6 Bn) on Monday 15/05/2017 selling a partial stake in UBS. There another portion yet to be sold which if sold, would total over SG$11 BILLION. In addition, GLC S’pore Post also wrote down SG$185 MILLION on their SG$234 MILLION investment in a US company.
What money are you talking about? The PAP just gambled away our money! And they are still paying themselves millions in salary for their failures! In years to come, PAP if they’re still in power, they would be begging China from some breadcrumbs to come their way.

This is just the tip of the iceberg.

GIC and Temasek between them have lost big time in just about everything they dabbled in. The total loss to Singaporeans amounts to $200b or $300b.

Those numbers are simply mind boggling by any standard.

How much does an average Sinkie (excluding the PAP parasites who live lavishly on tax payers’ money) have to work to earn $1,000,000?

And $300,000,000,000? Well, that’s the amount of our money the PAP have lost while paying themselves multi-million dollar salaries and bonuses.

On this matter I concur with Hard Truth.

In my view the real concern is One Belt. One Road is a ploy to temporarily assuage the immediate concerns of those who will eventually lose out. China’s capacities will increasingly move Westwards inland to be nearer to markets and to increase influence in the central asian region.

Only SEA countries that can potentially feed this westwards expansion will be accomodated.

Singapore has little to offer to this project. It overestimates the uniqueness of its expertse and capsbilities.

HARD TRUTH: We in Asean have to carve out our own role and existence.

There is no ‘We’ in Asean! ASEAN is a disparate bloc of different interest groups & a very disunited grouping divided by culture; religion & basically antagonistic feelings towards each other but formed together out of desperation after the EU was formed & economic blocs became fashionable.
The Hague Tribunal’s South China Sea Ruling had resulted in empty Provocation against China. Even the Philippines, the beneficiary of the ruling hesitated in provoking China preferring to have dialogue with China instead. The ASEAN joint statement had split the ASEAN Members with a pro-China member refusing to endorse a scathing Statement against China. It ended with a watered-down joint statement as a compromise.
The issue took a further turn down the road when a war of words erupted between the Singaporean Ambassador to China, Stanley Loh, and the chief editor of Global Times, Hu Xijin. The issue was S’pore political play which according to Global Times, the main reason behind China’s discontent was how Singapore openly sided with the United States to put pressure on China over the South China Sea issue. To be fair, that ‘Emphasizing the South China Sea issue’ wasn’t Singapore’s claim but the consensus of the ASEAN Summit. It was China who specifically single out Singapore for the collective decision of ASEAN.
And Singapore does hold certain attitude on the controversial South China Sea issue and actively support the United States in keeping it’s force in this region.
This had resulted in the OBOR Seminar where S’pore’s head of state being not invited for China’s biggest economic event. Right or wrong, the issue of geo-politics is changing & strategic alignments are also evolving. The PAP politicians showed a serious case of naivety in political shifts. Having said that, when OBOR is fully operative, not only will China likely see the contribution of Singapore or its economy to their interest as insignificant, they will also view Singapore more as a direct competitor which has hardly any comparative advantages that will be complementary to that of China’s.

Apart from market size, almost every other country does offer some comparative advantages in some industries that are complementary to those of China, such as in agriculture or other food production or in natural resources like minerals or forestry, or with labour that can offer certain comparative advantages compared to those in Chin such as higher or lower or native skills.

What does SG have to offer China? It used to be infrastructure expertise in the recent past, but not anymore. China has overtaken us in everything.
