Let Iconic Sungei Road Thrive

The SDP stands in solidarity with the merchants of Sungei Road and call on the PAP Government to rethink its decision to evict the vendors there.

The flea market is an iconic spot with a rich history going back many decades. It has become very much a part of Singapore and it will be a tragic loss of our heritage.

The place is also a venue for the vendors, many of whom are elderly and have plied their trade there for their entire lives, to eke out a living in their remaining years. To pull the economic rug from under them at this stage of their lives is a unimaginably cruel act.

This is where Singapore can be innovative and think out of the box. Instead of closing down the historic venue, if it is really necessary, for economic reasons, we could allow foodstalls there and turn it into a world famous market like the ones in Sydney, London, Taipei, and Tokyo.

If the PAP insists on taking back the venue, the least it can do is to source for an alternative spot where the vendors can continue to hawk their wares.

Not every thing in Singapore must be turned into profit. We cannot put a price tag on memories and our sense of belonging. Let us treasure the last piece of heritage of our nation.

Besides money concern, atas pap also doesn’t like the sight of our elderly dressed so shabbily selling old and cheap goods lah.

See sg now. Almost everywhere is occupied by beautiful atas looking buildings.

Image is very important to the pap as it makes them look so very capable to the world.

    Dear Readers,

Do not believe a word of SDP for SDP stand for Say Dada Party (Dada=bye bye).

Without PROFIT, where do the ministers and WP MP get their millions dollars pay check and bonus ?

Without high salary, politicians will corrupt and you will get low quality politician like Najib and gang and Sing dollars will be S$3 to RM 1.

Do you want S$3 to RM 1 ?

Think carefully before you vote for SDP.

As a teenager n young soldier,i used to buy my casuals there.
jeans went much cheaper than PENINSULA SHOPPING CENTRE.
SHIRTS that went for 3 for $10.
    and,they were of decent quality.

interesting place to jalan-jalan for youngsters then in the late 60s/70s/80s.

this is NATIONAL HERITAGE that cost PRACTICALLY NO TAXPAYER MONEY unlike the stoopid MARINA BAGGAGE N GARDENS BY THE BAY OF PIGS.

This is not heritage to smart city. Smart people, who can afford 40K french cooking lesson holiday for family and used to luxury don’t want tourists to see old people surviving on someone’s trash. Not smart. Not progressive and revealing too much of the inner city ghettos living standard of mentally unsound people ihidden behind the walls of finely painted HDBs

Smart and wealthy city must not be seen or associated with the city by product – trash. In form of denial.

not clear what the problem is with re-siting sungei rd.
after all, these guys fall right in with the govt’s
    urging to recycle and reuse.

what’s even better is that these guys are not just preaching.
    they are Practising this thinking!!!

in the process, they save the country money needed to
dispose of and destroy all this stuff….

pity no siblings to whack masagos for not having the
guts to meet up with them face to face.

aiyoh. sinkie land too much is paid for rent-seeking elements. tearing down and rebuilding (en bloc here and there). tearing down building shopping mall. tearing down building stadium. tearing down and building hub. imagine all the imported materials (construction) imported and not from some value-added materials made from within the country.

we begin to build a lot of malls, expensive toys and underground this and that – which will take a lot of energy (24 hrs lighting for tunnels) and maintenance cost if spoilt or leaked.
