Interesting facts about Attorney General Lucien Wong

AG Lucien Wong

1. Lucien Wong was PM Lee Hsien Loong’s personal lawyer and represented him during the dispute with his siblings over LKY’s estate.

2. Shortly after the dispute started, he was nominated to become Attorney General (AG).

3. The Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC), which Lucien Wong now heads, represented the Government and successfully fended off legal challenges by LKY’s estate.

4. Lucien Wong is the first ever AG to have no experience on the Bench, and to have never acted for the State in legal matters. He was a corporate lawyer.

5. Lucien Wong was appointed AG at age 63, to replace V. K. Rajah, who had to retire at age 60. When asked about Article 35(4) of the Constitution, which states that the Attorney General shall hold office until he turns 60 years old, Law Minister Shanmugam argues that the Government can arbitrarily decide to appoint someone above the age of 60.

6. Lucien Wong spent 30 years in private practice, and was chairman and senior partner at top law firm Allen & Gledhill. Shanmugam was also a senior partner at the same firm for many years before entering politics.

and Bonus Fact (not about Lucien Wong):

7. The role of ‘Deputy Attorney General’ was only recently created to reflect the “increasing volume and complexity of legal work of the Government”. Earlier this year, and for the first time ever, an ex-PAP MP, Hri Kumar was appointed the Deputy AG.

The more you know!

I have heard from close friends that Lucien Wong is a very smart lawyer and a good person. That is why he was Managing Partner of Allen & Gledhill for many years. He also won an award as top corporate lawyer in Asia. Allen & Gledhill also won an award as top corporate law firm in the region. Being a good lawyer and managing partner of a top law firm in Singapore he must be very well off. He does not need the AG post and/or to kowtow to anybody. On the Lee family saga netizens are barking up the wrong tree by involving Lucien Wong.

Yes, including the rules that arbitrarily exclude certain (opposition) candidates from standing for the Elected Presidency.

The idea is to keep out a non-PAP sympathetic candidate from being elected to avert the horror of that EP being handed the keys to open up the books to find that nearly all our reserves as well as our CPF retirement savings have disappeared.

Now you also understand why they have persistently refused to open up the books or tell us how much has been lost and remained absolutely silent every time when pressed for an answer.

  • Conflict? Really?:

Lucien is a top lawyer in Asia. He has the track record and the awards to prove it. If he has a REAL conflict it is fair to assume he would do the right thing. Singapore is a small place. It is almost unavoidable that a person top in his field will not wind up wearing “different hats”. This is not automatically a conflict.

When your CEO’s personal bodyguard, suddenly appointed as the company’s Chief Security Officer, will you not AUTOMATICALLY think there is a conflict? even if he was formally a heavy weight champion?

Lucien, age 63 yrs, replacing Rajah retiring at 60 yrs old! Rajah had served 2.5 yrs as AG successfully.

Rajah ticked all the boxes for having prior work experience like all the AGs before him. Lucien had none.

Even “different hats”, the hats must first fit the person and not look ridiculous, otherwise why wearing it ?

Let’s say there is an international rule of law setup long ago . That was setup by the west favoring the west. Must China follow this rule of law now when she is the economic power of the world? Last time the west powerful they have strong influence on the law. Now leh?
So, what is law? Is it morality? Is it ethics? Gambling and Prostitution also legalised in the legalised areas. So , is able moral and is is prostitution a ethical way of using the body?

  • Dr Tan Tai Wei:

Hadn’t LKY appointed a former colleague and close friend of undergrad days (who shared lecture notes with him), who spent his career as a banker and not at law, to be CJ? That CJ proved to be quick at delivering judgements, compared to Wee Chong Jin whom he replaced (LKY had wondered why CJs took so long to write their judgments, but never considered whether a quicker judgment might not be fair). And that CJ habitually doubled the sentences of those who appealed to him, even though it was the defence that appealed, and not the prosecution which was satisfied with the sentencing of the lower court. Thus, that CJ seemingly acted as both prosecution and judge by enhancing the sentences all by himself! More, by his act, he must have discouraged appeal, rather then encourage it for the sake of doubly ensuring justice.

@Theresa say: ‘But how do you explain sglians top in the world in maths and science?

Singaporean students are top in the world in doing well in maths and science exams. They are far from the top in expanding the boundaries of mayhs and science. They can and do deal well with establish facts and methods developed by others, but they are unable to deal with the not-yet-known and transform that into the knowable. That is what constitues real progress and comes closer to the execuse of wisdom.

Being really ‘top’ is not about learning what othes have established and being very ‘competent’ and excelling in ‘best practices’ but about truly forging new and original avenues of understanding hitherto unthought or unthinkable. That is true excellence and with it comes wisdom.

  • SIN Law suka suka:

The resume of the AG justifies the fear expressed by the royal siblings. The whole saga sounds the wayang depicting the taizi and his siblings followong the kaput of the emperor but with a twist, the execution of the kaput emperor’s last decree The saga also demonstrates the true nature and characterisics of bootlickers, brownnosers, polanpas or whatever in our four languages, races and their dialects and races. Once his bootlickers, now his oppnents. The kaput emperor’s is no more than a stinking fart.

Yes no wonder the kaput emperor has said many time that if anything goes wrong he will return from the nether world and take care of it ( how no one has the bolas to ask). tThis was generally interpreted to non papists take over the govt but now it becomes apparent that he referred to boolickers defying him and the royal siblings fighting to abide or defy his last Words.

This reminds one of the famous political cliche 不能治家,那能治国!meaning cannot manage family how to manage country. The sentiment of fear expressed by Mr Lee HY has many a time in the past been similarly expressed by the citizrn adverse critic of the nepotic regime bot all landed up in losing their pents and yet Mr Lee HY and Ms Lee seemed unaware until now. It is strange that the grandson (LHY) seemed ignorant of no Check and balances and the shits about self C&B which his grandfather himself can’t believe and thus his wayang with NMP and NCMP. Now the evil planted by the kaput emperor becomes just too real.

The revelation of the fear of abuse of power by PM siblings, the allegations and the lack of confidence in the Constitutional independent institution is significant with respect to public confidence of the integrity and the carriage of law. This is fufther evidencdd by Shammuggam that they are above the laws and can do what they like. This latest statement implies laws in SIN is suka suka apply. As the grandson (LHY) put it as salary dependent.

It is only honorable for LHL to resign before any further damage to the image of the country. But befote he does that or even if he decided not to resign, he should remove Shamm for destroying the image of the judicoary system and his admisdion that SIN Laws to him is nothing compare to what he say. He is LAWs literally. AGC should orfered his arrest for defying his seditious attitude towards SIN judicary System else it means there is no law then how come AG, Judgescand their Courts.

The advocation of hunger, greed and ferosity revently by PM concerning job seeking logically tie in withbthe defiance of SIN judiciary sydtem of a lawful society.

President seems stunted to passivity when the wolves shed their sheep skin covering amidst the hands that provide the bi for the jialiaobi. Sue for integrity no use Now!

Are Singaporeans really that stupid not to know that those administering the law are abusing the laws?
How can laws can be brushed aside and do what they like?
Doesn’t it chill you when law abiding is ridiculed by the practitioners themselves?
What purpose is a professional society if it turns against its mission?
SIN has become a damn joke on earch!

  • Squeaky clean:

Rewards for bootlickers by political regime are often overlooked as the line between legality and corruption is so thin and would only becomes clear with investigation in depth. This explained how bootlicking culture survive thru centuries dynasty after dynasty right into capitalism, democracy with all its shady modifications, communism, dictatorship and nepotism dressed as guided democracy. So 64 appts, directorship and various link in nepotism is as the bootlickers proudly said laws is what they say coumts not what are on the paper. As long as those self admission. are roaming free even royal siblings have to shiver lest all the billions gathered in good time with nepotic legality will vaporised like good old jaya now many thinkd is in heaven looking over the nether world. Could that be postmortuos sympathy as fear of kenna bang has not extended to heaven and hell. Good grief indeed.

One day which may be soon as the veil gradually liftd Sinkies would fearlessly come to their vocal senses that 64 reward appts sound not quite right from the point of efforts or free riding like the foreign professors in our institutions of higher learning.

    学府也如此。真是—群披羊皮的狼! 把狼也汚辱了。

    脸皮也太厚了吧。
