PAP MP put forth ‘tough questions’ on famiLEE feud

Mr Christoper De Souza

In a surprising episode in the 2-day Parliamentary sessions to address the famiLEE feud, a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Workers’ Party Peoples Action Party (PAP) has put forth some hard-hitting questions.

During Monday’s (3 July) Parliamentary session, an MP from the PAP camp, Mr Christopher De Souza had asked 10 questions relating to the famiLEE feud, hoping to uncover whether there are any truth to the allegations made by Dr Lee Wei Ling and Mr Lee Hsien Yang against their elder brother, Prime Minister Lee HsienLoong.

The MP for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC said that he believes that it is the aspersions that have been cast upon organs of state that have catapulted this issue from the private domain into the public sphere.

Mr De Souza said that it is important to investigate whether the mission of the organs of state are subservient to the agenda of any personality, as alleged by PM Lee’s siblings.

He then put forth the following ten questions to the Prime Minister and to Parliament:

  1. Is it true or false that organs of state are being used to target Mr Lee Hsien Yang and Dr Lee Wei Ling?
  2. Dr Lee Wei Ling and Mr Lee Hsien Yang questioned whether “able leaders with independent political legitimacy will be sidelined to ensure Hsien Loong’s grip on power remains unchallenged.” Is it true that ensuring the Prime Minister’s power remains unchallenged trumps independent political legitimacy?
  3. Mr Lee Hsien Yang said, “a few of the attacks we had to face in private are now public. False accusations, character assassination, the entire machinery of the Singapore press thrown against us.” Is it true or false that the Government uses Singapore press to target Dr Lee Wei Ling and Mr Lee Hsien Yang?
  4. The siblings have said that they see “many upright leaders of quality and integrity throughout public service who are constrained by Hsien Loong’s misuse of power at the very top.” Is it true that public service is constrained by the Prime Minister’s misuse of power at the top?
  5. Is it true or false that the leadership and direction of the government is directed for personal purposes or any other improper purpose?
  6. Is it true or false that organs of the state may be used for personal agendas?
  7. Is it true or false that the ministerial committee is merely a facade that the Prime Minister is able to influence in one way or the other?
  8. Is it true or false that the ministerial committee never told Mr Lee Hsien Yang and Dr Lee Wei Ling about options they were exploring?
  9. On 15 Jun 2017 at 9.25pm, Mr Lee Hsien Yang wrote, “Hsien Loong’s public statement contradicts the statutory declaration he made to his secret committee. It is wrong to lie to Parliament and it is wrong to lie under oath. Is it true or false that the Prime Minister lied to Parliament?
  10. On 14 June 2017, Lee Hsien Yang said, “Hsien Loong has asserted to the committee that Lee Kuan Yew would accept any decision by the Government to preserve 38 Oxley Road. In doing this, Hsien Loong has deliberately misrepresented Lee Kuan Yew’s clear intentions for his own political benefit. He has also gone back on his own declarations that he would recuse himself from all government decisions involving 38 Oxley.” Is it true or false that the Prime Minister has misguided a ministerial committee to fulfill his own personal purposes?

Mr De Souza said that while he does not doubt the integrity of the Prime Minister, he has a sacred duty to the constituents he serves to ask the “tough questions.”

He said that he hopes the responses to the questions he has raised will bring an end to the saga which has impacted Singapore’s standing in the eyes of the international community.

About Mr De Souza

Mr De Souza is a practising lawyer who has served in state courts, the Supreme Court and the Attorney-General’s Chambers. He is currently a partner at Lee & Lee.

He currently has no ministerial portfolio and it is anyone’s guess if he will be promoted to an MOS or will remain ‘gainfully employed’ as an MP with the PAP, like a certain former PAP MP who spoke against the NMP scheme.

PM LHL has to answer truthfully the 10 very relevant tough questions posed by this lawyer PAP MP whether he likes it or not! If he doesn’t and just remain silent hoping this national crisis (his crisis) will eventually go away by itself, he’s Mighty mistaken….this scandalous saga will not only go on but will grow worst as long as his 2 siblings remain alive and not silenced in any way. The Internet and specifically the Facebook will be LHL’s worst nightmare.

If the answer to any of the 10 questions asked is a “yes”, PM Lee should be impeached. Parliament must decide whether to remove him as the PM or force him to resign. Surprisingly, the WP failed to ask such questions and allow PM Lee to go scot-free. PM Lee cannot hide the truth forever as his brother slowly tightens the noose round his neck with more revelations.

Christopher’s “ultra tough” True or False questions are identical to LeeLoongLoong answering either Yes or No. LeeLoongLoong answers No and that is the end of the story. No more further probing.
Being a lawyer (which I am not ), Christophers knows the importance of asking open-ended questions instead. Open-ended questions typically don’t have a single right answer. Instead, they’re meant to encourage to start a discussion. Saying that he has a sacred duty to his constituents, why didn’t he go for the jugular with open-ended questions? Allow yours truly to modify a couple of his questions:

    Christopher’s unedited “tough” question #1:
Is it true or false that organs of state are being used to target Mr Lee Hsien Yang and Dr Lee Wei Ling?
Ans : It is false. THE END, right?

    Open-ended question #1:
Could the PM share his views on the allegations by Mr LHY and Dr LWL that organs of state are being used to target them.
    LeeLoongLoong’s probable answer : Err, ahhh, owwww…

    Christopher’s unedited “tough” question #9 :
On 15 Jun 2017 at 9.25pm, Mr Lee Hsien Yang wrote, “Hsien Loong’s public statement contradicts the statutory declaration he made to his secret committee. It is wrong to lie to Parliament and it is wrong to lie under oath.

When you go round fixing people up (nobody will ever know the extent of it, it dies with the fixer, only God knows), KARMA steps in and delivers the punishment in her own ways. KARMA is never wrong. KARMA is true absolute justice. KARMA fix you up for destroying the lives of so many people while you sleep in your comfortable bed in your cozy room.
    What are the punishments?
The punishment ranges from pain and deprivations in the physical form or worst still in the mental form.
How worst could it be then to be “shamed” and mentally affected dragged through the mud in public.
If this is not punishment, what then do you call this.
    Reflect.
Let this saga be a lesson to everybody.
Repent, and hopefully at least try save your own soul before it is too late.
How; you figure and sort it out yourself as you will face your Maker alone.
“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”.
Otherwise KARMA will surely fix you up as you deserve it.

In his closing address, the PM has concluded that all questions were answered and any doubts as to the honesty and integrity of him and his Govt has been reaffirmed with this Parliamentary sitting and subjecting himself to questioning and scrutiny; and hence no need nor cause for a COI.

The opportunity has come and gone. There were no direct allegations from any of the MP’s present, but merely a direct repetition of what the siblings had said, which is “unfounded” and “void” of actual evidence, as correctly stated by the PM.

This wasn’t even a genuine attempt to “corner” or “challenge” the PM, just another occasion for convoluted and expansive speeches, that missed its “mark” and allowed the “target” to continue his autocratic and self indulgent rule. Shame on all those present, complicit in a shambolic charade !!!

PM Lie has answered all your questions by opening daring you to “prove” he abuse power as PM. And if you dare,……we will see what happen to this “brave” Souza. If nothing happens, Souza is just wayanging. If something happens, it just proves PM abuses power.

Wayang party missed the chance to ask tough questions. Just a lot of posturing! They should take DPM Teo’s words that they are sons and daughters of LKY, and hence brother of LHL, to shout some accusations at him without needing to worry that LHL will sue them!

  • Dr Tan Tai Wei:

There seems to be this basic distrust of the entire system LKY had built, that it is one that can be manipulated by the powers-that-be, such that, however PM can now say to explain and justify his acts and those of his Ministers would be taken by his siblings as further proof of how cleverly he has schemed to “thwart papa’s will”. Now, what interest us should be “how come this distrust by two so close to LKY’s heart and his doings through much of Singapore formative years?” So, are those who have been suspicious of, say, the true “independence of the judiciary”, or the real motive behind, say, the group MP scheme, somewhat right? Etc, etc.

  • Dr Tan Tai Wei:

This exchange may be significant. PM said yesterday that after he offered to sell that house to sis for $1, LHY wanted a share. This insinuated that Yang was greedy, etc. (When PM repeats this outside Parliament, Yang can sue?) Just after, LWL explained that it was she who asked Yang to share, as she was too busy and would not want herself to undertake all papa wanted done to the house. So, did PM deliberately leave this detail out, or did he not know, and therefore misunderstood? But why didn’t he, as a responsible and caring elder brother, ask, rather than be so quick to sully the LKY genes, thinking his brother could be so greedy, etc.?

This MP asked these questions, but did PM Lee give any “straight” answers ? Did PM explain how HC was made CEO and still is after so many years ? This appointment had been called into question so many times and for so long, there was never a satisfactory answer. My few questions are therefore:

    1. Is it true that there are no competent or capable person beyond HC ?
2.Is it true that while HC purportedly answers to Min. of Finance, PM Lee was the Minister of Finance for a long period of time. Was there not conflict then ? Even if no conflict as PM has always claimed, can he honestly say that people’s perception is the same.
3.Can PM Lee honestly say that HC’s appointment as CEO with millions of salary is without his backing or blessing ? Meaning our Ministry of Finance is so weak that they cannot attract capable persons to the job.
    4. As a PM, should he not ask HC his wife to step down from her position so as to avoid being perceived as conflict ? Like PM’s mother ?
    5. Many would question, who is the real PM, LHL or HC. Readers already have the answer..

  • Questions tough Meh?:

How can questions to verify the truth of accusations substantiated with material evidence be tough? These questions are the very reasons for the Parliament to convene and if only the matter of the house Parliament was called then it is really an abuse of power for Parliament is to deliberate on National Issues and not on private family business. MPs and Cabinet members are not there to support the PM and if they really have supporting evidence they should avail themselves as witnessed in a Court of Laws and duly subject to scrutiny of the t and lawyers of both sides. Otherwise they could be construed as abusing their position esp when the PM specifically stated he will rely to any questions and to prevent any protrusion of inappropriateness he lifted the party whip presumably meaning no party discipline for fielding any question however embarassing or extraordinarily blunt.

From the report on the sittings. Singaporeans really aren’t any wiser of the validity of the accusation. No challenge was offered on the material evidence from the accusers siblings. No new material evidence was offer to counter the accusation. All Singaporrans heard esp from the PAP MPs and Cabinet are irrelvance to throw any light on the accusation. What was more troubling was PM categorically stated that he was there at his own request to answer any questions from the house and to prove that he meant what he said, he was willing to lift the whip. The call from the Speaker on time out on WP Low defeated the spirit of PM to snswer whatever questions on the accusation. What was worse were the speeches clearly defending the PM instead of questioning him.

Singaporeans were surprised that PM didn’t stop thse obvious brownosers which would definitely marred his real purpose to show his responsibility as PM of the nation and in fact supporting indirectly consciously or unconsciously with naivety the siblings.

Nevertheless the closing words of LHL were more damaging than helpful to his cause for calling the Parliament to sit. His claims are just words to Singaporeans left with much bewilderment than doubts. As far as Singaporeans are concerned. the matter remains wide open and undoubtedly suspicion, speculation, doubts and what then are the truth linger on both in the mind and in history or the new version oral history.
