Next time lim kopi how?

Seems like several hot drinks stalls at the Redhill and Jalan Berseh have raised their drink prices since the start of July when the water tariffs hike kicks in. At Redhill Food Centre, at least seven out of about 10 hot drinks stalls have increased prices by 10 cents, with a cup of coffee now costing S$1.10.

Over at Jalan Berseh’s Gourmet Street coffee shop, prices have also gone up by a similar amount, with a cup of coffee now costing S$1. At some of the stalls, notices have been put up to inform customers that the higher prices took effect on July 1. However, the hawkers insist that the price increase was due to a lot of other factors, such as rising costs for the their rental, and not only due to the water tariff hike.

Following announcements by the government about the tariffs hike, they had also warned that businesses against profiteering from the move. Thus, this probably explain why the stall owners cited a myriad of reasons why their drink prices goes up, and not only because of the water tariff hike.

And whose the primary mover for the increasing cost of living in S’pore? Seriously, there’s no respite nor end to S’pore’s escalating high cost of living. Cost goes up one-way but never comes down to reflect global input prices; adjusts for comparative cross country market comparisons; nor for deflationary trends:
    1. Petrol in Australia is about A$1.13/liter (about SG$1.19/liter). In M’sia, it is RM2.01 (SG$0.65/liter). And what is the price for petrol in S’pore? a whopping SG$2.09/liter! And that’s 2014 oil price levels, not 2017 oil price level.
    2. A Mitsubishi Attrage cost A$16,500 (SG$17,360) in Australia; in M’sia RM 75,250 (SG$24,185). Did I hear that it costs a whopping SG$76,000 (incl. COE) in S’pore!
    3. Baby needs milk! A can of baby formula powder NAN comfort step 1 costs A$17.00 (SG$17.85) in Australia; NAN Pro 1 costs RM97 (SG31.85) in M’sia but NAN Optipro 2 costs SG$51.00.
    4. Japanese ladies cosmetics in S’pore costs 2x to 4x the price in Japan. Most imported food items from Australia costs about 30% to 40% higher than in Australia.
    5. A pair of jeans costs A$20 (SG$21.00) from K-mart in Australia; in Japan ¥2900 (SG$35.00) from Uniqlo but an average jeans in S’pore costs SG$50 & above from Giordano or Uniqlo.
Why are things in S’pore so high priced & expensive? Importers or retailers must be making a killing selling in S’pore. Is there no check & balance within the system? Why is the PAP turning a blind eye or are they the problem.

    @ Logical Reality

IT IS THE QUANTUM OF INCREASE of profiteering that upsets consumers. How can some lines of fresh seafood items in PAPpys-run supermarket increased by 15% or more this week?

Yes, cleaning fishes use water BUT IT IS THE SAME AMOUNT OF WATER whether you clean a small fish or bigger fish and water is less than 1% of the total cost of fish sold. A fish item costing $10 might use only 1 cent of water. Even if you double that to 2c, the price of the fresh fish should not increase to $11.50 per kg overnight.

Logical Reality: Only logical to see price increase when basic essential components items price increase…

  • Amos humiliate L*L and PAP:

Prices are relatively high in Singapore for the following reasons:

    (1) The cost of doing business in Singapore is high, especially rentals. Why? Because property price is high. Why? Because the PAP makes a killing from the high property price. It can control property price by adjusting the development charge and by tightly controlling the supply of land.

    (2) Singapore is a very small market.

    (3) Lack of competition. NTUC which is PAP-controlled dominates the market. Cold Storage and Sheng Siong are minor players. NTUC is the price setter. NTUC is PAP’s “bank account” It is used by to “warehouse” its future office holders just like GLCs like Temasek, Keppel, DBS Bank.

Bottom Line. PAP is responsible for the high prices in Singapore. Its office holders don’t care because they are paid millions each year.

    @ Logical Reality

IT IS VERY EASY TO RAISE FOOD PRICES in supermarkets and PAPpys know that, the number of customers of fresh foods are PLENTY and sellers ARE A FEW – A NEAR MONOPOLY SITUATION EXISTING.

When water price rises by 10%, they play the game of PRICE SEMANTIC – just increase food items by 10%. If resentful consumers boycott, there are the hungry richer ones among the large pool of consumers will BUY – regardless of the quantum and rate of price increase – so the angry boycott by a few peasants will last only a day or two.

SUPERMARKETS KNOW THIS OPPORTUNITY FOR EXPLOITATION OF RICH HARVEST.

Once the rich starts buying and take of the essential food items off the supermarkets, the MUCH ELEVATED price becomes the new “accepted benchmark” – a price which the poor cannot afford to eat anymore.

AS LONG AS PAPpy imports more and more foreigners, some on higher salaries than Sinkies, FRESH FOOD PRICES WILL CONTINUE TO ESCALATE UPWARDS at faster and faster rate and that diffuses through the entire food chain from Kopitiam to restaurant and home cooking meals.

PAPpys population recycling economics have screwed up Sinkieland and 70% of the daft cawkeds refused to wake up.

    I notice s each time the Govt increase civil servants pay Hawkers up their price;
They donot realise bulk of their customers come fr Pte sector struggling with retrenchment ; displacement by ft trash etc; another common trick of Hawkers they reduce the amount of food; eg a bowl of noodles say three dollars no change but they give you one third ; you know it’s not enough so you tell them topup n give them extra

    @ Singapore is for Millionaires

THERE YOU GO, MATE – my information sources is ALWAYS RELIABLE!! It is oligopolistic competition among A FEW fresh food supermarkets. They raise prices at every TRIGGER OPPORTUNITY and their price rise is NOT for the same items – knowing that the masses of consumers have NEITHER the luxury of time nor convenience of own EXPENSIVE transport to engage in bargain food shopping.

Sinkies are at the mercy of random price increases in supermarkets of random food lines and this is AGGRAVATED BY MASSIVE FOREIGN POPULATION INFLUX – some with HIGHER PURCHASING POWER & MEANS to help supermarkets jack up their prices randomly leaving the peasants to live on the edge of ever tightening poverty struggle.

IT IS A SILENT EPIDEMIC OF SECRETIVE PRICE COLLUSION out there among supermarkets according to my source – the price INCREASE are NOT for the SAME items across DIFFERENT supermarket chains indicative that this is NOT supplier-driven price adjustment but simply PRICE CHANGES INITIATIVES coming from the supermarket itself.

Sinkies can check this among themselves to see if my reliable source is correct. If this is true and correct, it means SYSTEMATIC PRICE GOUGING by supermarkets IN ROTATION – you raise price, I will follow you later of those items and I raise price of my chosen items, you follow later. That way, all prices will rise higher and we as a collective group of supermarket operators of a few sellers WILL BENEFIT ALL OF US TOGETHER.

I DID SOME RESEARCH RECENTLY – Supermarkets in Sinkieland makes a net margin of 5% to at least 7.5% on sales but supermarkets in Australia, HK, UK, EU, Canada and USA makes between 0.5 per cent to 1.5% on each dollar of sales. This is a VOLUME DRIVEN BUSINESS of profit chase BUT SINKIES ARE TOO STUPID TOO NEGLIGENT AND TOO LAZY to do some research and PAY FOR SUPERMARKET -supplied foods through their nose.

AND PAPpys just make it A LOT WORST OF FOOD PRICE INFLATION by jacking up its foreign population influx.

REALLY, if the dumb 70% starve of expensive foods, THEY ALL DESERVES WHAT THEY GOT of blind obedience to “eastern values’.
