Joseph Schooling qualifies for final of 50m Butterfly event in FINA World Swimming Championships

Singapore's only Olympic Champion, Joseph Schooling

Singapore’s homegrown swimming talent, Mr Joseph Schooling has qualified for the 50m Butterfly final in the World Swimming Championships in Budapest.

Schooling’s qualifying time of 22.93s in the semi-finals of the event puts him as fifth fastest qualifier for the final, breaking the previous Singapore and Asian records in the event.

Commenting after the semi-finals,  Schooling said that he was happy with his overall performance, as his main concern was to qualify for the final. He also indicated that once the final starts, anyone can win it.

Schooling has targeted the 50m Butterfly and his favorite event, the 100m Butterflyfly, of which he is the Olympic Champion, as the two world crowns he wants to win.

The final will take place on Tuesday (25 July) night. Singapore’s other representative, Mr Quah Zheng Wen, will also begin his first event, the 100m backstroke, on Monday.

All the best to Singapore’s swimming heroes!

Updates: Mr Quah Zheng Wen finished 18th place out of 46 competitors clocking a time of 54.68s for the 100m backstroke event, and misses out on the semi-finals. Schooling managed to finish only 5th in the final.

  • Beg to differ:

    What homegrown talent?

He used to compete in swimming competitions in Malaysia when he was little through his mother. It was Perak, his mother’s state that gave him his first competitive opportunity and not this PAP run country. The mother knew the importance of competing in a larger pool so she enrolled him in competitions up north. PAP did little to support the aspirations of parents like the Schoolings and still haven’t done enough to invest in talent. PAP would rather take the shortcut and give foreigners PR or citizenship as they’ve done in table tennis. Look at the table tennis T2 event in Johor where we’re represented by so called Singaporean Feng and Co. Now our football is suffering since we no longer compete with Malaysian teams.

While it’s good to have an Olympic gold medalist,it would be even sweeter if he was born and bred in Singapore with parents who are also born and bred in Singapore.

The government must do more to nurture local talent and not expect other countries to do their job for them!

This is a good example of homegrown talent.

At the finals, if Jo wins the world championship, would his glory again be highjacked the second time, again asked to attend Parliament once more to receive another standing ovation from the opportunistic PAP Govt?

  • So what dude:

It seems that only winners are being recognised around here in SG. Very sad that the unknown, less capable and insignificant ones are left behind with no recognition but only fault finding by people of authorities, superiority or higher position like in education, schools, companies, private sector and public sector etc (I can share more if time permits.). It is always nice to tell people off for their fault except your own. This is very much the mentality of vanity, self-denial, over confidence and exclusiveness of most people and the adult generation here. Continue this and SG will find its sad destiny sooner than expected cos the bullies will always victimize the weak. They dare not take on their own size people…LOL.

  • Wasted but good job:

Is a waste that he only gotten a bronze but very good job still. Sadly the mass media reported him regrettably obtained a bronze, what kind of value reporting is this (despite our education wanting to inculcate good values and character development in our students not just winning – Only Wayang with words at best!!LOL). They only after all treasure Champions!!! Nothing lesser than that.
