Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC needs a by-election

Today, I, and many other residents under Marsiling division, will become “orphans” as our MP, Halimah Yaacob, will be tendering her position as the MP and Speaker of Parliament to the Prime Minister, so that she can run in the Reserved Presidential Election.

Even though she has said that the other three MPs in the Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC will take turns to look after the Marsiling division, how well will they be able to carry out that additional responsibility when they have their own ward to take care of?

Will they be fully focus on the Marsiling division as well as Mdm Halimah when she is our MP here?

Mdm Halimah has also stated that she will asked for the Prime Minister to send an advisor to take care of the Marsiling ward as soon as possible.

The question that needs to be asked now is that, do the voters and residents here voted for her or the advisor? So how legitimate will the position of the Advisor be?

And for sure, the voters here did not ask to be short change with having MPs from other divisions having to be rotated among themselves to look after Marsiling division. We voted for 4, and not 3 MPs to serve in the Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC.

To be fair to the residents and voters here, a By-Election needs to be called as she is the only Minority MP in this GRC.

We, the residents and voters under Marsiling Division deserve to have our own MP and not those on loan from other division.

Be fair to the residents. Be fair to the voters of the Marsiling Division. A By- Election needs to be called!

If PAP says there’s no need to have By-Election, then does it mean that Halimah has not done much for her residents that her other colleagues can easily help to cover her duties? Or does it mean that she hasn’t done anything for her voters that even when she’s gone, her absence does not matter?

And if any advisor can cover her work, then does it tell all voters that future GEs don’t need to vote for the PAP? Coz anyone also can do a PAP MP’s job!

  • Uncle Lim:

Since when has fairness been a core value of the PAP?

Mostly likely you voted for her, right? If so you have to live with a party that doesn’t show respect to the voters.

The Malay community in general are proud that they are going to get a MALAY President.

I spoke to a Malay foodstall machik and she beamed with pride when I mentioned that.

She’ll turn out to be yet another puppet of one family. Then you have to live with your choice.

Very clearly the Constitution did not state that a GRC cannot have a by-election. Every time a seat is left vacant in Parliament it must be filled by another MP popularly elected by the voters.

In the case of Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC; MP Halimau did not mati or is incapacitated but abandon her wards unceremoniously to move higher up in the food-chain, mid way through her second term as MP. The voters are betrayed and deserved better. A by-election is justifiable.

Second but more important the principle behind the GRC mechanism is to ensure the minority race interests are represented by an elected MP from the minority race in a GRC. When MP Halimau resign there will be no more minority representation in Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC until the next GE which is more two or maybe three years away. A by-election is justifiable.

Do not sell the Malay voters short by replacing an elected Malay MP with some unelected official to serve them. The PAP cannot do this every time they want to avoid a by-election

since when has pap been fair?

abuse of S$1 billion in pap PA for political purpose and not one of stupid 70% realizes it.

good thing is, a very good thing indeed, the number of local born with degrees from local Us are jobless with an increasing number having their homes repossessed. it is when this number reaches a critical mass, then, and only then, can the rest of Singapore hope for a fair government, not a fair pap government, but a fair New Government.

when new citizens lose their jobs and this number increases, then, and only then, can New Government be in place faster.

for now, to hope or ask for fairness from pap is like singing song and talking hen and chicken. because when an india muslim is classed as malay and every malay says okay then no hope.

  • have we independent judiciary?:

The PAP will cheat again. They will cook up another inane and illogical excuse to say that why there is no need for a BE in Marsiling-Yew Tee. And the state organs will rubber stamp what the boss says.

Remember, we have only a PAP rule of law in SG. The Elections Office is not independent but reports directly to the PAP. They change the electoral rules according to the PAP’s instructions.

Marsiling division residents to resort to the courts?

Before you decide to resort to the courts, ask yourselves: Do we have an independent judiciary? Is the fate and ricebowl of the judges at the mercy of the PAP?

I do not have anything bad to say about Mdm Yaacob. She is not running for the presidential election. How can she be running for this election when other indigenous Singaporeans are barred for entering the race. It is a sham!

Of course there must be a BE, this is the other even hotter topic that will be on our minds now.

Goondu Loong tried to avoid having one when Michael Palmer’s affair was made public. He failed and lost that seat. Surprisingly he didn’t squirm when the same happened to David Ong.

If PAP’s reason for having a stand-in is accepted then in future we may as well not have anymore elections since PAP can also say their people have done a great job in looking after voters and so deserve to continue serving based on that. I know it sounds absurd but these days the PAP isn’t so confident come elections. They know that whatever gratitude left over from 2015 has all but dissipated so they also know that their vote share in Marsiling would probably be under 60%.

A by-election is required in the marshaling-yew tee constituency! This is all the more so because the minority mp chooses to resign from her job. She did not die in office and as such there is no reason not to call for a by-election.

The election laws would be breached under the group representative constituency if the position is not filled by a by-elections.

In law-abiding Singapore, it is thus necessary to comply with the Rule of Law just like The Hague arbitration on the South China Sea.

Not holding a by-elections would mean that the minority citizens of marshaling-yew tee are not served from now till 2020!

It is only right that residents of marshiling-yew tee make a police report or a magistrate’s complaint if no by-elections is declared!

Singapore should be moving forward. We should seek new office holders who are better qualified than the present. In respect of the EP who is the guardian of our reserves I cannot see how HY is qualified what more suitably qualified than the present office holder. We should be selecting the EP on the basis of merit. If it be a minority well and good. If say Tharman is selected there would be no objection as he is ably qualified. We should not be racist in the selection of the EP.

LHL should call for by-election in this Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC because these areas has at least 40% ex-foreigners converted to new citizens. They are mainly Malaysians, PRCs and Pinoys. All these people usually work in the Jurong, Tuas and Sembawang areas. These new citizens would vote for the PAP. Just like Bukit Batok.

When PAP win this GRC, PAP can really ownself praises ownself. They can do whatever they like, with a bigger blank cheque. LHL, go for it, would not go wrong.

Call the by-election same time as the President Election, save one day holiday some more.

  • GRC bunkum, nonpartisan ????:

A minority MP resigned from GRC. If there is no by election to put back a minority member, then PAP will just confirm the view of many Singaporeans that GRC is put in place not really for the reasons given by PAP but for the reason of serving a carrier to ferry young PAPplp into parliament without endorsed individually by Singaporeans on its own merit.

Minority race feel being conned and used by PAP for their self interests, gratification and glorification.
The resignation from a political party after being in the forefront of the party for so many years just before any election, requiring a candidate to have no affiliation to any political party, cannot be taken as nonpartisan in any rational sense.

If there is check and balance possible only with a multiparty Parliament with the ruling party holding a slight majority, such criterion will not be so blatantly violated. A man with long affiliation to a political party esp in its management cannot be accepted as nonpartisan when this is an important criteria for election of the head of state in particular when the ruling party has near absolute control of the parliament and bureaucracy. Self checks and balances is bunkum and hookwinking.
