MRT: You don’t care – why should I?

Is this arguably – really what MRT’s “deep-seated cultural issues” means?

I refer to the editorial “Track weakest link in rail operations“, the articles “SMRT gives staff a chance to admit lapses“, “WhyItMatters: Fare move to ease congestion” and the five letters (5 out of the 7 letters in the Forum Page were on the MRT) in the Forum Page of the Straits Times, (Nov 3).

After reading the all of the above – the thought came to my mind that perhaps the root cause of our problems is what my friends call “you don’t care – why should I?”.

Allow me to explain.

You see – when we finally get what I believe to be the largest reduction in public transport fares from the fare review formula (most of the time in the past it was “fare increases”, not “fare decrease”) – what do we do?

We roll-over (which I believe means defer lah) -3.2 of the -5.4 fare reduction to next year’s fare review exercise.

“As to “The discounted fares before the morning peak period will amount to a fare adjustment quantum of -2.2 per cent. The balance -3.2 per cent quantum, which was allowable under this year’s fare formula, will be rolled over to the 2018 Fare Review Exercise” – does it mean that the -3.2 reduction would have resulted in a reduction in fares for practically everybody?

If this is the case – why are we deferring it to next year’s fare review exercise?

Is it fair to do this to commuters?

With regard to “The lower pre-peak fares will translate to a combined reduction of about $40.1 million a year in fare revenue for public transport operators” – will the net effect of the deferral of the “-3.2 per cent” mean that the transport operators may actually be making more or less money – relative to the commuters in totality?

So, if we arguably, seemingly, appear to “not care” for the people – what do you expect the people who work with our MRT to do?

Maybe – since “you don’t care – I also don’t care lah”!

Perhaps also kind of “akin to” – what my friends say “monkey see, monkey do lah”.

Uniquely Singapore!

  • PAP has the mandate:

When PAP itself, has no accountability, no responsibility and no transparency, what do you expect from rank and file. Remember to lead by example and if you cannot control and motivate your workers, the CEO of MRT and the transport Minister have failed miserably. Please resign.

  • opposition dude:

I read the report on the fare reduction, it seems that losing $$$ over the 3 years for the tap out before 7.45am trial was taking too long to arrive at this decision. They mentioned something about 7% of commuters tapping out before 7.45am in the CBD which was short of their projections of 10% or something.

Another one that they got rid of was the overpriced $80 pass, they said only 200 commuters were using it regularly ha ha ha. Of course lah, who the hell is going to pay $80 just for taking an unreliable and always disrupted train network anyway?

So now the new pattern of saving 50 cents should apply to more commuters since you get the discount if you tap in before 7.45am at the station of your origin. We know for certain that quite a number of people are on the trains at 7.30am since the frequency of the rains is at 1 or 2 mins during that period.

Let’s wait and see what other stunts will be pulled for next year. We have had a small fare reduction for 2 years in a row and now a 50 cent discount, I want to see what other creative things PTC will come up with.

  • Amos exposed PAP hypocrisy:

What happened at MRT is no surprise. The pay of rank-and-file MRT staff is peanuts. Top honchos parachuted in from SAF are paid millions. Temasek-controlled SMRT “pretended” to pay its staff so they “pretended” to do the work. They know top management, including board members (mostly civil servants), do not want to get their hands dirty by checking on the ground. Like the spineless, overpaid civil servants they prefer to stay in air-con office, seating on expensive office chairs pushing paper.

People should be aware our MRT, in particular the NS and EW lines are very old, so breakdowns are only to be expected. When there are breakdowns free bus services are given. That is good enough on the part of SMRT. What else do we complain about? And don’t forget our alternative forms of transport, like buses, taxis, and now even Ofo Bikes. Also, our train fares are among the lowest in the world while SMRT has been incurring huge maintenance costs in recent years. If people want better service, then be prepared to pay more, that is how things work everywhere in the world. Ultimately, it is shocking that some of our fellow Singaporeans are complaining about such trivial issues when people in other parts of the world have even more inferior train services.

  • pap selected INDIAN president:

well, 70% sheep has a say, if they want to.

every time they is a breakdown, of 30 mins or more, S$5 will be credited to commuters’ account.

pap works by money, from citizens’ CPF. so the only way to wake up pap is to use the same citizens’ CPF money.

REPEAT. every time there is a breakdown, of 30 mins or more, S$5 will be credited to commuters’ account.

we assure you pap shall solve this mrt train breakdown problem in no time.

BTW where is every ffffing pap LJ and pap CB? how come no sound no fury? 70% sheep votes them into parliament to be so silent? as if whether they exist or don’t exist does not matter? if so, why vote for these pap MFs at all?

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
not one pap LJ or pap CB has stood up to ask how come an INDIAN is a malay. NO. NOT ONE has stood up.

when INDIAN papa is indian. when INDIAN ic says indian. when mendaki says INDIAN. when she herself has lamented about her INDIANness.

these 80+ pap LJs and pap CBs sure cannot be trusted. NOT ONE has stood up to ask the question, how come an INDIAN is a malay. WTF.

Come on, NS & EW line very old? Older than HKG MTR? Every time there is a screw up, we lower our standards. At one time we used to set the standards. Now , the Govt move the Goal Post and we lower the bar. Sad state of affairs.

  • Bullshit Ong talk cock:

only now then MRT realised NS and EW lines can become old? so did nothing before they breakdown?

know how to impose mandatory vehicle inspection and force people to scrap car every 10 years, yet don’t know how to make MRT run smoothly even when it is “old”?

Train fares lowest in the world? but lowest as a proportion of take home pay? Sydney’s lowest paid workers spent not more than 10% of their take home pay on public transport, no matter how far or how frequent they travel. What about you?

No other country in the world has more inferior train services compared to SG, period, even if you ignore how much more we pay our transport minister and train CEO.

    Trivialising the obvious?

  • Tell Management to FO:

Yes if they don’t care why should I?

That is the way MRT lower rank think. It is natural.
They salivate at the salaries of the overpaid Minister, the overpaid CEO and the overpaid useless army generals pulled over by the Quack.
In the process, existing staff staff’s promotions are by passed, and the deprivation of existing staff makes for low morale.

    So why should they care?

Solution? LHL should wake up and be a more responsible person to the people of Singapore. Remove all those useless overpaid people and employ people with world class experience at one quarter of the pay and you will see the MRT humming again. From the savings you get by chopping the useless top off you can redistribute the savings to the lower grade employees. Thank will motivate them.

The rot started from the top. So LHL, chop off the top to stop the rot from being systemic.
Be pro active and demand accountability.
Singapore is going down the tubes with this PAP government which does not accept responsibility for anything wrong and does not account to the people.

70% sheep must wake up and pressurize the govt. For once do something for your own country.

  • Sly Move:

The MOT and CEO and the Chairman are trying to deflect admission of responsibility for the failures by picking on scapegoats.

This is unacceptable. The processes and systems of audit are not in place or not carried out. There are lapses in supervision by management. Management cannot be absolved from the responsibility.

The management team MUST be held responsible.

The punishment at Management should be dismissal because of the huge salaries and bonuses they get but have not been responsible.
For 5 blooming years CEO cannot solve the problems but kept on getting worse.

Why should the CEO continue to be paid stratospheric salary but cannot solve the problems.

In the commercial sector he would have been sacked in the third year.

The MOT blames everybody but also cannot solve the problem. He is utterly useless and must be sacked too.

PM Lee please do your job or you also should be sacked.

  • Rumour:

Let me share with you why Singapore Civil Service screws up big time
    in IT.
There are lots of Project Managers in Civil Service, lots are ONLY aiming
for ONE HOLY GRAIL. i.e. Maintenance Budget.
Once they acquire the Maintenance Budget, simply seat there do nothing.
Everyday come to work find excuses not to improve anything. Too busy with
    DOCUMENTATION.
So ex Civil Service manager when they get to industry and awarded Civil
Service contract, they do the same to Civil Service.
Keep on delay Project deliveries, keep wanting more Project Hours
so that they can justify their existence.
This is not sustainable cause Singaporeans cannot keep on paying for
maintenance services that basically does not exist.
This explain why Singapore Civil Service CANNOT INNOVATE. Cos lots
are Keng King in wanting more for themselves only.!
