The MRT Inquiry should include one more question?

I refer to Christopher Tan’ article “How deep is the SMRT rot? 4 questions about the rail company that an inquiry could answer” (Sunday Times, Nov 5)

Whilst we are at it – may I suggest including a fifth question.

Because it may address what is the perhaps the root cause of our MRT problems – what my friends call “you don’t care – why should I?” culture.

Allow me to explain.

You see – when we finally get what I believe to be the largest reduction in public transport fares from the fare review formula (most of the time in the past it was “fare increases”, not “fare decrease”) – what do we do?

We roll-over (which I believe means defer lah) -3.2 of the -5.4 fare reduction to next year’s fare review exercise.

“As to “The discounted fares before the morning peak period will amount to a fare adjustment quantum of -2.2 per cent. The balance -3.2 per cent quantum, which was allowable under this year’s fare formula, will be rolled over to the 2018 Fare Review Exercise” – does it mean that the -3.2 reduction would have resulted in a reduction in fares for practically everybody?

If this is the case – why are we deferring it to next year’s fare review exercise?

Is it fair to do this to commuters?

With regard to “The lower pre-peak fares will translate to a combined reduction of about $40.1 million a year in fare revenue for public transport operators” – will the net effect of the deferral of the “-3.2 per cent” mean that the transport operators may actually be making more or less money – relative to the commuters in totality?

So, if we arguably, seemingly, appear to “not care” for the people – what do you expect the people who work with our MRT to do?

Maybe – since “you don’t care – I also don’t care lah”!

For a long time now, I noticed the take it or leave it attitude of their service counters at train stations.

They serve you without making eye contact or say anything.

So these days I also do the same since they don’t care I also don’t care.

    Worse than China!

  • Harder Truths:

We all know the answer to that – please!!

There is no reduction ok? It’s an illusion. Since you don’t have it how can there be one? Like CPF Life or David Copperfield making the Statue of Liberty disappear.

If your boss (if you happen to be employed you are lucky right?) tells you – ‘Hey! Great news. I am giving you a raise this year. But I will have to roll over the money to sometime in the future. You still have this phantom money only you don’t have it.’

Sure – now government servants can expect more phantom increase in pay. They deserve it for voting in a phantom government

He is PAP. PAP is never wrong.

Wait for Khaw boon wan cock & bull story to show how good he is & how everybody else failed him.

Hence, the conclusion is it is everybody fault especially Singaporeans so Khaw boon want will declare he deserved the huge paycheck & an even bigger bonus since he is faultless & the best.

    Parliament concurred.
Case closed. Lets move on, declares lhl.

Got to bring the Performance Bonus system back to the drawing board. PB is looks more applicable to higher management. For service workers, maintenance workers, operators… Service Bonus should be used instead.

Not deep seated culture, but the wrong policy in the whole Singapore, all along. So much for scholars.

  • Amos exposed PAP hypocrisy:

Remember like a fish the “rot starts at the head” – all the way to the top. There is no accountability in the public sector so why expect it from a GLC like SMRT. Ho Ching lost hundred of millions at Singapore Technologies and billions more at Temasek. Tony Tan lost billions at GIC. Both were not held accountable. Why? This is PAP meritocracy PAP.

The inquiry will be another PAP wayang just like the last one in Parliament when LHL acquitted himself of the accusations of dishonesty and abuse of power by his siblings. After the inquiry expect a fare increase. Shit-face KBW will justify it by saying if Singaporeans want an “improved” public transport system they will have to pay (full) price for it. Paper-general Quek at SMRT also needs to be paid his millions annually (plus bonus) despite his dismal performance.

You are Spot-on, “Concerned”! Our tida-apa attitude is now so deep rooted, to borrow the SMRT CEO’s words that it’s require a thorough review by our coverment.

But that is day dreaming, no?

To the people in charge, all is Fine and Dandy. They don’t use most of the public transportation, public facilities, public parks or eat and shop at our neighborhood malls or Hawker Centers.

When they do come by, it’s a pre-scheduled visit. An inspection after many other Inspections!

    ARMY/ MILITARY STYLE!

He and all the other ex military men who have been parachuted into CEO posts are running it like that.

These ex generals have ZERO experience in running a company.

    *****
The MRT inefficiencies will and can only worsen, because they do not have the right personnel in place. The Kuek and Khaw double act will continue because they are indispensable, in other words “unsackable”.

    What’s the answer then?

It’s obvious. Get the right people and I don’t mean, another bloody general or unqualified minister and by unqualified I mean, an individual whom happens to be a minister, not on merit but by virtue of “his face and surname fits so he’ll do”.

Until this closely knitted together and incestuous Govt decides to venture outside of their “community” the MRT is doomed and it’s commuters will just have to continue to suffer in silence, apart from the odd hundred or three; which is one of the damning causation for this Govt’s continued dependence on promoting from within, void of merit and experience.

  • THE QUESTIONS:

    1. Who is responsible for the systemic failure in ethics? The current CEO or the previous CEO?
    2. If it is the current CEO, then he must go. If its the precious CEO then she has gone.
    3. Who is responsible for hiring of the guilty CEO? The Board members must turn out to apologize for incompetent supervision.
    4. Who is incompetent in hiring the Board?

  • Tsk tsk:

It is time for SMRt to be returned to its rightful place, Ministry of Transport. Why let SMRT be part of Temasek Holdings, adding another layer of unnecessary burden of reporting for SMRT. If as KBW said, SMRT is not there yo make money for the PAPgovernment, then let SMRT run as a true transport company without all the retail part.

Putting a retailing person at the top of a mass transit system is absolutely illogical.

While a retailing-trained person’s core competency lies in maximizing retailing rental for shops, running a highly technical outfit such as a mass transit system requires an entirely different skillset, namely utmost competence in engineering and technical expertise in order to forestall and prevent future problems which can be expected to arise years down the road, such as what is being currently being experienced.

Ministerial COI? Meaning Minister appointed members. Ie PLPs. Verdict forgone conclusions. Only difference how to avoid sacrifice of other plps if possible and if not possible who should be Sacrificec? Ministerial committee means minister is excluded from the investigation but this involves the ministry minister included! So may Ministerial changed to Presidential. Presidential means Presidential Council since President is ultimately controlled by the Council and who appoints these Council members? So Sinkies U R trapped! But! Future is really in ur hands only if u think esp in front of dangling carrots at your expense!
U r advised to be hungrier greedier and more aggressive. Are the carrots good Enough? Promises and past promises? Just focus on how to extract urself out of the strangling past promises.

Nepotism or check and balance backed democracy. Criticise without threat and say FO threats. Reverse threat of KO MFs. Leadership in crisis…. when we needed politician, we pay millions. When a pump goes wrong, we witch hunt and sack those directly responsible whereas for TOP management get pay cuts. In the first place, these TOP management are over-paid, using pay-cut or bonus cut is an example of stupidity in our leaders.. clearly the motivation is all revolving around money, money.. this is how sad Singapore civil servants and pap politician had reduced their style of leadership to the gutters … worse like the longkang water leadership …

More money if Yu are responsible… less money if Yu are less responsible… pap style in leadership is throwing and lining carpets of money towards responsibility .. our pap leaders are broken in their ideas and Minister Khaw Liang San Po theory of mutual support will only get Yu clowns and pretenders… use an axe hack it away.

Pap leaders are a laughing stock ie can’t even get a simple pump correct… Lim SS cheap Good better theory had put all of our infrastructures at great risk.. never before had Singapore fallen so far behind while politician sip blue honey with white cheese romancing the moon while our moral system are slowly deterioting and getting broken… Ching Ching Ho putting incompetent to run our system… the whole clonies economy system will break down this country
