‘Don’t stop learning’: Flashback to 30 years ago in 1987

“Lifelong learning” is as relevant today as it was 30 years ago in 1987

I refer to the article “Skills portal to guide S’poreans from age 11” (Straits Times, Oct 30).

It states that “A new website has been launched to help Singaporeans plan for their training and career needs from as young as 11 into adulthood, as people are encouraged to think about the learning process as a lifelong one.

Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam launched the MySkillsFuture website yesterday, as well as SkillsFuture Advice, a new public outreach programme.”

In this connection, I did a search at the “National Library eResources” and found the following “interesting” articles in the Straits Times about encouraging “lifelong learning” – 30 years ago in 1987:-

Don’t stop learning scheme” (Straits Times, Jan 15, 1987)

Standard measure to assess part-time course certificates Employers receptive to standardisation scheme” (Straits Times, Apr 12, 1987)

Professionals cool to study credits scheme” (Straits Times, Dec 25, 1987)

Perhaps, it’d be far more appropriate if there was a programme/course dedicated for the local SG lot too ………………. “Don’t keep believing ……… the PAP”, and this should be made compulsory, and in Singlish too, naturally of course !!!

In other words, this government is rehashing old ideas. Well, we’ve been paying top salaries for supposedly “top talents” in the government, and all we get are old ideas, sub par standards and deep seated poor culture. We’ll soon be left behind on world stage, and drop from 1st world to 3rd world. Even our soccer team can lose to war-torn Lebanon!

Ha ha ha another PR spin from the party we all love to hate.

What use is learning a new skill when so many jobs have been taken over by non Singaporeans and we can’t even get a salary for the high cost of living here?

  • Harder Truths:

Our children have to study from toddlers to GCE and then university (they think they are lucky if so) and then go out into the workforce and drive taxis (also they are lucky if so).

Since all real jobs are taken by FT – our children cannot earn enough to support themselves while the pappies and their balls carriers lavish in wealth and go for $5000 cooking classes in Europe (remember that one?).

What has changed in 30 years? We the citizens have become the unwanted in our own island.

Will ‘lifelong learning’ get us our island back? I don’t think so.

I have attend one of these course. I thought I could learn something to improve myself but it turns out to be like attending a sermon.

It just preaches to change mindset of accepting IT and what the PAP govt has plan for us in the future, as if it was the govt initiative that IT is here.

It was more of propaganda than training. I wasted two days. The trainer just took my money, through the SkillFuture fund.

  • Amos exposed PAP hypocrisy:

The problem in Singapore is that LKY’s self-serving education system has made most Singaporeans so STUPID and FEARFUL they cannot understand and/or face reality. They cannot see and/or refuse to admit that they have been screwed big-time by LKY and PAP.

Remember “thinking” was a big issue in local schools and it still is. Singaporean student are trained to be exam smart and to always conform and to defer to authority. They have poor analytical (thinking) skills. The same for their communication (verbal and written) skills.

Life-long learning is useful but certainly NOT sufficient to have a better future while the PAP is in power. Why? Because of its pro-alien policies. You might have additional skills (from life-long learning) but there is an equally (if not more) skilled “cheap” (no CPF) foreigner who will beat you for the job.

Life-long learning will NEVER pay-off for Singapore until there is REGIME CHANGE. Singaporeans must have the SPINE to throw out the arrogant, self-serving, greedy, incompetent and pro-alien PAP.

REGIME CHANGE is the BEST and really the ONLY viable way forward for Singaporeans for a better future.

Why would you even consider having a family if your children will most likely wind up being brainwashed by PAP into a another “slave” for the PAP.

    REGIME CHANGE IS THE SOLUTION.

Arrogant, self serving PAP is a SPENT FORCE. Bury it with LKY at the next GE.

You got it! It is just another SELF SERVING SPIN from the arrogant, pro-alien PAP. They try to give Singaporeans hope while they give the jobs to the foreigners.

    REGIME CHANGE IS THE SOLUTION.

  • Rabble-rouser:

S’poreans need to wise up & note that the present-day economy isn’t the same as 30 years ago. The present day economic model is changing rapidly & shifting into the unknown every 5 to 10 years. We’re no longer into the traditional cyclical business phase/predictable cycle but more worrisome, we’re into a totally discrete, technologically disruptive & exceptionally discontinuous future where history has had no precedent to fall back on.
What this simply means is that businesses could suddenly go bust due to disruptions & discontinuities; skillsets, work experience & knowledge could suddenly vaporized when automation & robotics takes over; & universities, mainstream school systems, traditional educational curriculum suddenly looks very vulnerable as new knowledge, findings & new paradigms evolved at a greater rate than the school system can disseminate.
Too many S’poreans are still wedded to the PAP’s extinct Ideal of a Job-centric world of good education -> well-paid jobs -> expensive house & continental car -> comfortable retirement with ample funds. But that ideal world had evaporated into the mist around 1998 ACC, early 2000s the moment when the Internet & technology came into our lives. It is now a grim & challenging future.
The PAP themselves are unable to come to grips with the Knowledge Economy & the Technologically Disruptive Future. Our PM LHL even had to resort to reading & re-reading his father’s historical speeches for clues, directions & old ideas on how to confront this overwhelming & scary future.
PM LHL’s ‘All or Nothing’ bet on Globalization continuing completely disintegrated when Donald Trump’s 1st act on coming to POTUS office on Nov 2016, was to cancel TPPA.
And it is clear that the Developed Economies are slowly adopting an anti-immigration stance; erecting barriers against their domestic property market being plundered by foreigners [ie. PRC]; imposing trade barriers & negotiating trade agreements (no more free trade); & passing legislation to penalized Corporations & Businesses that offshore their profits in Lo-tax jusrisdiction. In short, Globalization are slowly being phrase out in the Developed Economies (the deep-pocketed End-Consumers of Globalization program). The Asian Economies are mainly configured for the Export-oriented growth model with very weak domestic economies – they were the beneficiaries of the Globalization program. But it is ending.

    - Cont’d -
The other side of the Globalization coin is the Securitization/ Financialization face. This was represented by the overinflated Asset Bubbles, a Low yield environment & highly indebted economies re: Corporations & Households. These were the dysfunctional aspects from both Globalization program & Financialization processes.
    But it cannot continue as;
    * Electorate turmoil mounting in Developed Economies (lack of good jobs, poor economic opportunities, mounting anger, etc) coupled with;
    * a Huge Debt overhand (Govt deficits, Corporate debt & household indebtedness) – a turning point for interest rates.
What had S’poreans learnt in 30 years or for the fact, over 50 years of PAP rule? S’poreans still placed too much trust in the PAP for their future & are still subscribing to their Academic & Job-centric model. But the future is now looking bleak & have the PAP have any ideas & solutions – You tell me?
When S’poreans still plough deep into buying high-priced properties & bidding high prices for COEs to buy high-priced cars – it is evident they have not learnt anything! They elected to put themselves under large debts without realizing that it will be their debt situation that will kill them when the Global Economy turns for the worst!
PAP IBs are doing the worst by pushing out rubbish propaganda that S’pore Economy is doing alright & there’s nothing to worry about. You be the judge & tell those naive people the real stories on the ground – as I don’t think things are alright in S’pore.

So has it worked after 30 years?

    Nope.

Ask the employers who prefer “cheaper, faster, better” foreign thrash.

Like the ailing rail system and corrupted CPF scheme, most if not all of PAP policies have failed.
