Hat Trick for SMRT’s misfortunes

Thor - God of Thunder

SMRT has scored a hat trick for the number of misfortunes within a short period of time, when lightning purportedly struck one of its train today afternoon, landing the train captain in hospital.

On or about 4 pm today (20 Nov), a train which was approaching Bedok MRT station was purportedly struck by lightning. As a result, the captain was sent to CGH and warded for observation. The incident also caused delays and passengers in the affected train were also asked to disembark at Bedok MRT station.

The incident was confirmed by a spokesman for SMRT, Mr Patrick Nathan in the evening:

A westbound train heading towards the city stalled as it was approaching Bedok MRT station. Passengers were detrained at Bedok station, and the train was withdrawn from service for investigation. After the incident, the Train Captain, who said he was unwell, is receiving medical attention.

Surprisingly, the chances of injuries caused by lightning strike to a train is very scarce as most trains nowadays are built to prevent such an incident from happening.

According to Mr Nathan, each train is protected by a “Faraday Cage”, an enclosure formed by conductive material that blocks electric fields and electric currents such as lightning strikes.

If lightning strikes, the electric current will travel through the outside shell of the train, not through the cabin, and pass through the wheels to the track.

So how did the train captain got injured?

Previous Misfortunes

Last week, there was a ‘kissing’ incident between two trains at Joo Koon station.

In October, a flood in the MRT tunnel between Bishan and Braddell resulted in a major breakdown that affected some 250,000 commuters.

Was the Faraday Cage working as it should?

If it was, then how did the lightning managed to injure the train captain?

When was the last time that the Faraday Cage was checked and maintained?

Maybe the Faraday was not checked as in the case of the pumps?

Wonder this time who will SMRT throw under the bus train, maybe Thor, the God of Thunder or Astrape, the Goddess of Lightning (tic)?

At the rate things are happening, I don’t think we have seen the end of the disasters. As if it hadn’t gotten more ridiculous, people are already placing bets on which line will be hit next. We all agree that investigations have to take place but I ask you this : why is DK and the minister still around after so many issues ? All investigations will either be carried out by those lower in the chain or independent parties so what value has this two multi-million gentlemen, who slept between the last two to five years added to the transport industry ? They have earned their millions, so shouldn’t it be time for them to go !!!?

  • Failed Faraday:

Since the train captain can be injured by lightning strike, what is stopping future lighting strikes from killing our passengers? Did the Chinese manufacturers cheat on the Faraday cage as we might expect these rogue businessmen might so? If so then the electric current from the lightning travels around the train, routes through the hearts of passengers, and kills them all! How tragic that would have been!

  • Dont trust PAP:

Singapore is rotting inside out, it is just that ordinary Singaporeans cant see and dont care.
Even PAP MPs dont care about PM Lee misleading them in Parliament on the racist (sic) President Act. In other countries, even some developing countries, the MPs would have ousted its leader, Mugabe, a dictator for 37 years was ousted by its own party, and the military. In Singapore, the PAP ministers are paid millions and make even more on the sideline, like Mah Boh Tan, the senior military leaders receive patronage, they are given Perm Sec jobs, CEO jobs that pay millions. There is a saying that if there is no cock up, it is not the army, problems in the army is not revealed to the public except for death incidents where there is a COI, so Desmond Kuek, CEO of SMRT, a former Chief of Defence, his precessors, successors, can get away with incompetency in the army and SMRT which is now delisted and a govt owned company under Ho Ching’s Temasek.
If PAP and its cronies continue to hoodwink the people, the civil service, and any appointed investigators will play along with PAP, nothing will be done.
So dont trust PM Lee saying that they will get to the roots of the problem. He and his Ministers said the same thing for every major incident before 2015 GE but problems keep recurring. Can we trust him this time?
It is the same for housing. We cant trust Mah, just like Khaw and Lawrence Wong.
PAP said they will level up everyone and keep cost of living affordable. Govt statistics show inflation is low, housing index has come now. Is that so? No, property prices remain high beyond many. Only certain sectors of the better paid workers in Tech and banking industries and public servants can afford private properties and over a million dollar HDB flats, the rest of the population has to pay through the nose to own a subsided HDB flat if they can afford or get a loan.
PAP allows developers to bid high prices for land, and land prices have more than tripled since LHL became the PM. But PAP will not sell the land if the bid price falls below the reserved price, about 10% below the “market price” but will accept high bid price that is over 40% above the “market” price (because it is upto the govt valuer and analysts to determine the “market” price after the event). So can we trust Wong who warned developers about bidding high price for govt land? HDB flat prices have a correlation with land prices and private property prices, so expect prices to go up, not down.
wong is “relaxing” the farce measures implemented by Khaw and the filthy rich Mah, and turning a blind eye to the dirty tricks and tax avoidance of the developers and rich. He said huge supply is in the pipeline like Mah said in 2009 and Khaw in 2012. Enbloc fever is high, sentiment is bullish…

  • Cant trust PAP:

Everyone except those like PM and its cronies preventing not to know, knows MRT problem is due to years of neglect and overcrowding.
Contrary to what Khaw said, SMRT as a listed co then, was to make money for the shareholders, its profit will make Ho Ching’s Temasek return look good especially in time when other investment returns are bad. So, SMRT maintained the system minimally, and LTA and MOT go along with it with their minimal refulations and supervision.
After so many major incidents, PAP decided to apply pressure to SMRT to delist and then pump in millions of dollars into SMRT to make up to the years of neglect – no heads roll in MOT, LTA or SMRT or pay crawl back or whatever, from the MOT Minister Mah in 1990s to Khaw.
The overcrowding has started since 2004 when the immigration bloom started, thanks to LHL. Anyone who has been taking the public transport would have observed ever overcrowding in trains and buses. Unfortunately, not for PAP Ministers, MPs and rich cronies and RCC, CC, PA supporters because they don’t take public transport, or dare not voice out, or really don’t care, or have absolute trust in PAP that everything is ok.
In the 1990s, SMRT and SBS invested or speculated in properties when the market was hot and rising, investment returns were good. Then came the Asian FInancial crisis, the public transport co property investment return turned sour and pulled down its performance, to make up for it, fares increased with the blessings of PAP controlled Transport Council. Then despite rising ridership and fares, SMRT and SBS still need to increase revenue and profit to satisfy their investors, then Temasek SMRT recruited Saw, an airport duty free retail expert, as CEO, and the government gave her to develop spaces in MRT stations to earn rental income.
ALl thhose years, SMRT, SBS, their shareholders, Temasek holdings are laughing to the bank.
Now who pay for the problems, not PM Lee, not Khaw, not BMW driven Mah, not Ho Ching, not Saw, it is the tax payers at large, and the inconvenienced poor commuters. Now PM Lee sounded out taxes including GST have to increase. Remember Tharman, his deputy PM, said in GE 2015 that PAP did not need or have any intention to increase GST to squash “rumour” that GST will increase after the GE.
It is the same for HDB flat prices, property prices, national health care insurance premium.
It is the same Singaporean workers first, we need FTs, FTs create jobs for us.
Yes, we see more foreigners, but foreigners are creating jobs for more foreigners, not Singaporeans, and more foreigners are displacing Singaporeans in jobs and housing. Singaporeans are renting from foreigners not in condo but subsidized HDB flats.
That is Singapore state of affairs.

Do we need a really really big disaster to happen before PAP government gets really serious about the SMRT problem?

Maybe a relative of ho ching or children of that idiot lhl to get really hurt by SMRT trains then lhl will even bother about this problem?

How can lhl & PAP be so arrogant when incident after incident took place yet lhl can so shamelessly declares that there’s no real issue.

It’s not nice but maybe getting ho ching relatives be hurt in SMRT incident then maybe things can changed for the better.

There is no concrete proof that driver is not affected by the lightning strike. For complete safety should we avoid taking the train whenever it rains ?

Avoid Trains When It Rains ?:

There is no concrete proof that driver is not affected by the lightning strike.

Surely they know but did not mentioned, Why the driver was in hospital for two days before the lightning incident? Why hide his illness from the public? To protect he driver privacy or to protect the poor human management of SMRT from exposure once again.

And again why no update on the train driver after taken off the train and warded in hospital. Update means medical report from the doctor why the patient was admitted to the hospital so urgently.

Maybe, the driver suffered a heart attack? The sudden and awesome some of thunder might cause his heart to skip a beat and loses its rhythm and he collapsed had to be admitted to the hospital again.

If SMRT don’t want concerned customers to speculate, always paint a full picture to inform and educate the public. Abstract art open to interpretation is a no no.

Or maybe the driver had been struck by lightning. The front and back cabin of a train are most vulnerable to lightning. Are you very sure the Faraway cage is in good order and regularly maintained by conscientious staff unlike those in Bishan?

Achieving this sort of corporate culture isn’t just about engineering excellence, but is, ultimately, about management and leadership.

There has been criticism about the way outsiders have been brought into SMRT, though I do not think it is necessarily a bad thing if they have the expertise and experience. But it is asking a lot of a leader if he or she is from a completely different field with no experience in mass transit.

Singapore prides itself as a country that practises meritocracy, hiring the best person for the job.

But it is equally, if not more, important, to have leaders emerge from within an organisation, acquiring experience in-house, and who have developed respect and support of peers and fellow workers.

This is far better than parachuting outsiders who will need years to get up to speed.

I hope the right lessons are learnt about where SMRT fell short in this area and what needs to be done.
