SMRT: Train not struck by lightning

Singapore Mass Rapid Transit (SMRT) has issued a further statement pertaining to the train which was supposedly struck by lightning on Monday (20 Nov).

In its latest statement issued on Tuesday (21 Nov), SMRT clarified that lightning did strike the train which was bound for Bedok MRT station when it stalled.

As a matter of fact, it was the track-side equipment which was struck by lightning, causing the train to stall.

After investigations, our engineers confirmed that the train was not hit by lightning. Instead, lightning affected trackside equipment.

SMRT added that the train captain was already unwell 2 days before the incident and was warded for observation, unrelated to the lightning strike. He has since been assessed to be well and remains under observation.

The rail operator said that it takes the passengers’ and its staff’s safety very seriously and reiterates that it is safe to travel in the trains during a lightning storm because trains are protected by a ‘Faraday Cage’.

This is an enclosure formed by conductive material that blocks electric fields and electric currents, such as lightning strikes, from entering the trains. During lightning, the electric current will travel through the outside shell of the train and not into the cabin. It then travels through the wheels to the track.

Closure of MRT Stations

Meanwhile, SMRT has announced that 17 MRT stations on East-West Line (EWL) and two MRT stations on North-South Line (NSL) will be fully closed on 10 and 17 Dec (Both Sundays) to allow for extended re-signalling works to be carried out.

Other than the closure, these 17 MRT stations from Tiong Bahru to Tuas Link along EWL and the two stations on NSL, Bukit Batok and Bukit Gombak will close earlier on Friday and Saturday at 11pm and open later on Saturdays and Sundays at 8am from 8 December to 31 December.

Full-day closures on other segments of the EWL have not been ruled out.

So, now the resignalling project is to be sped up ho ho ho.

See how it will be done and just how reliable it will be. SMRT has a long way to go to restore confidence.

That is, if it even manages to restore confidence in the first place.

So the logo of the PAPigs is safe. It didn’t struck the train, only the fiacking track-side equipment! The Big Q: that means track-side equipment on that particular session of the rail system when that unfortunate train passed through was NOT EARTH-PROOF against lightning strike! So no sure now the Blame has to be AIMED at the track-side Maintenance crew! Think SHTF is fast and furious. Take care of the head, now the legs suffer muscle pull. Anyway, commuters esp the 70% can still continue to ride the trains all day LOONG and have full confidence of the PAPigs, esp the $millions Ministers and top guns who are on hands and legs AS SERVANTS to SERVE the MASTERS(citizens esp the common folks commuters)duly and diligently. Jia Yu!

  • KBW blames others again:

As everyone has expected KBW blames contractor Thales for the Joo Koon trains collision in order to absolve himself of blame to protect his million dollar job! This is his trade mark , this is SG’s definition of meritocracy? Previously, he blamed SMRT maintenance staff for ” failing us” blamed DK for the poor culture in the company and that DK should shoulder responsibility! B following KBW’s strategy of defending himself, SG ministers cannot be held accountable for any major fiascos or lapses as there are always someone else in the frontline operations, how easy millions! For the Lightning strike at Bedok, one wonders whom will KBW blame? Mother Nature? Or SMRT bad luck,?
BTW, PM Modi earns US$ 30k, Prsident Xi earns US $ 22 K a year, many times less than a perm sec in SG! LHL earns US 1.7 mil a year which is equal to the combined yearly salaries of heads of States of France, Germany,Italy, Japan and UK, you know his responsibilities compared to each of these HOS! Also there are so many ministers helping him in the PMO and some ministries are helmed by two ministers! This is life to quote KBW!

It is very inconvenience to go without the MRT now since we have been too used to taking it for travelling. If we really have to shutdown the system for a major overhaul, let it be.

Didn’t our great leaders ever said bite the bullet, the pills are bitter, we won the people over by the hard way etc ?

Let’s shut it down for a week. We can declare a golden week like China. Everyone will have a long week (9 days) holiday.

People can go oversea for travelling. Our tour agencies and airlines will boom.

People who are not going oversea can do shopping in the mall. The retails will benefit.

Overall the lost in productive for the shutdown can be offset by the economic gains from people who spend.

What do you think? Support kee chiu meh.

  • 2 MOTs 2 contrasting styles:

The spate of train problems for years reveal two very different behaviours of LTK and his successor KBW! LTY appears to be a gentleman, held himself accountable and resigned despite having to forgo his millions which he knew he would not be able to get in the private sectors. Many applaud him. KBW clings on to his millions by always deflecting away blame to others, to DK, to SMRT maintaEnance staff, to countr or Thales, praised himself by saying that train services have improved three times since he took over, rail reliability has improved. Heis paid milions to take charge of transport matters one would expect the top man to take collective responsibility with the rest of stakeholders in improving the train operations and not expecting him to throw them under the bus each time lapses occur! If every Sg minister behave like KBW, always blaming others for lapses and incompetence it spells trouble for SG! Who has the morale to work under him, if trains run well and smooth , KBW will be the one to credit for sure, you heard of him praising himself several times in the past!
One wonders the Lightning strike on train at Bedok, who will he blame? Just watch he will come out with one, to save his own skin! Ministers in other neighbouring countries especially in HK and Taiwan where the trains are running well under them who are paid pittance compared to DK and KBW! KBW has the support of LHL and his fellow ministers?MRT still first class?

This is just as bad, what is it in a sick corporate culture where sick drivers do not have the common sense to seek medical help and instead he could have spread communicable disease to all commuters?

Another defect in MRT system – ineffective/defective lightning arrester. But really The main defect: Run by incompetent paper-general. Same problem with Singapore. “Clear the swamp” by VTO – the only way.

First “they” say…Safety of Passenger is important .

Then “they” say the Train Captain was already unwell for past two days ??

How come SMRT Management and Protocol can allow “unwell” Captain to Work and drive a train carrying so many innocents lives ?????

“Twist” here, “twist” there…..still looks like SMRT do have Management and Work Culture problem indeed !

Better “closed down” the whole Company and “award” another “Foreign, cheaper, Better, Faster..Talented Operator” !

Desmond and Cow can go Penang and play “Sand Box simulation” and “jerk” themselves ..who cares !

  • rukidding:

Maybe in would be a Good ideal to “Close” the whole MRT system for a month.

There are so many “simulated” exercises,..ie Army,…Police,…Terrorist attack..etc.

All these “simulations” are “pre=planned” and sadly…”wayangs” for public ( especially kids and daft adults to see and feel good )

I am sure if we “closed” the whole Mrt system for a month….you will see REAL CHAOs like GRID LOCK and Insufficient Buses to COPE !

Imagine..if WAR were to happen….how to ESCAPE ?

How can the Police, Ambulance, ARMY react ???

Closing the whole MRT for a month is a GOOD TEST and SIMULATION of our Roads and Transport support system !

  • Commuters speak out:

A frustrated commuter voiced out in the ST forum page today that affected commuters suffering from repeated train breakdowns are not frustrated with the train disruptions per se but more frustrated and angry with KBW’s repeatedly blame on others when a delay or disruption happens! Isn’t as MOT he is the fore front to direct the train operators and their contractors to resolve problems and shoulder collective responsibility for any fiascos? Each time a serious train problem occurs he would expectedly seek out something or someone to blame on, as if his millions of dollars of salaries has nothing to do with train failures.he blamed the flooding of Bishan tunnel on the maintenance team, the poor work culture and failure to solve problems on DK, the train collision at Joo Koon on Thales Frenchcontractor…… The frequent delays due to re signaling which should not be counted in train reliability assessments .You guess what he Will blame on the Lightning strike at Bedok? Even with commuters frustrations and anger, he has the cheek to announce that train operations have improved3 times since he took over from LTY, rail reliability has improved, we still have a first class transport,…… All self praise sure he will claim credit if trains are running smoothly but has he done any work or give directions when trains are running foul? Yes he has done something that’s to ask Metro Taipei experts for help, DsO experts for help and a certain Dr Richard to be seconded over to SMRT to sort thing out! All potential rectification works are done by others, what credit can he claim! The very sad thing is that the PM instead of pressing him to deliver what he has been paid highly for, praised him that he hard work he had ,done blah blah blah, is this what he calls meritocracy, cling on to millions of $$$$ for incompetence!
Will KBW still be around if LKY was still around?he is lucky earning so many times more than PM Modi, Prsident Xi…… Just blaming on others! Find scapegoats , spin stories to glorify himself. ……….

To them, it is not train struck by lightning, is lightning struck by train. Just like colision is come in contact, inside is not within. It takes scholars to come up with these brilliant interpretations. That is why they are paid millions.

On the other hands, also that is why they lose million outside this police state. Cause outside this hell hole no one buy their stories. Only the LJ70 buy their stories.
