Shen Zhen Metro

Shen Zhen Metro

Just visited Shenzhen (GuangDong, China) again recently and it always amazed me whenever I went over there from Hong Kong.

There are two things which always amazed me…. The efficiency of clearing custom and the MTR system in Shenzhen.

There are two crossing points along the border of HK and Shenzhen. The customs on both sides are well integrated with their MTR systems. MTR stations were built just NEXT to the customs within walking distance.

In fact on the HK side, the MTR stations were built into the immigration building!

You will cross the custom check point immediately right after you exit the train stations.

The customs were very efficient and it could handle well above 1 million crossing per day during peak period. Compare this to our Singapore customs, that’s really unimaginable.

Shenzhen MTR system was built and managed by HK MTR. It was constructed in 1996, a decade later than Singapore MRT. It started operations in 2004.

But unlike Singapore, it only took 20 years for Shenzhen to complete EIGHT lines with 286km of track and 199 stations! Serving 4million rides per day! Compare to Singapore which under PAP dragging their feet in building MRT, we took 30 years to build less than 200km of tracks, 155 stations (some are still under construction) and service 3 million rides per day.

The Shenzhen MTR is not operating at its full capacity yet, with trains coming at an intervals of 4 minutes. But its coverage is rather amazing.

For places which we used to travel to, we only need to pay 7 rmb which is less than $1.50sgd but that distance is way longer than Pasir Ris to Joo Koon.

All stations come with tight security measures with X Ray scanners for bags and items brought in by commuters.

I always suspect PAP GOVERNMENT has deliberately made crossing the custom to Malaysia JB as inconvenient as it can be because it knows Singaporeans would swarm to JB to buy cheaper daily necessity if it is so easily accessible.

Yes, Singapore government purposely designed the crossing of causeways inconvenient to discouage Singaporean going JB for shopping and makan. Our MRT performance is dismayed yet our Minister has the gut to say we are best though not the best. All people in Singapore know this cunning styles of PAP government yet they continued to vote for them.

  • PAP is "busy":

One should not compare MRT in Shenzhen and Singapore. PAP is too busy “fixing” opposition and thinking of ways to get more money out of Singaporeans which it can use to buy their votes during GE. Chineses do not have GE.

Many are already aware that those “delays” and “traffic jams” on Singapore are “deliberate” delays.

You can literally “witness” for yourself how those AETOS Officers “switch off” their traffic controlling duties when the “clock strikes at 11pm”. You will see “havoc traffic interlocking each other at intersections between Trucks, Buses and private cars…all scrambling and horning away…..whilst those AETOS Officers….simply “walks away” without even being bothered to help !

So bloody obvious ….and we are paying taxes to them ?????

It’s mostly the common folks who flock to JB via car, motorcycle or public transport to get foodstuff and daily essentials there. Their products which are of similar brand and packing cost much less. They have to endure the human crush and strict security checking at the Causeway and 2nd Link Tuas checkpoints. During peak morning, evening and festival seasons, the jam would take 1 or 2 hours to clear the Immigration and Custom checking! The ruling class and the filthy rich will take a plane if they want to travel up north. Anyway, these rich Buggers would AFFORD and prefer to pump local petrol and dine in local posh restaurants unlike the common folks who have to endure massive jam and LOONG queue just to get cheaper petrol, dine and purchase cheaper stuffs from JB.

The transport system in $G is an ad-hoc collection of sub-standard roads, trains and even pedestrian ways.

Much of it is used to maximise profit or future earnings for government linked bodies. The quality of MRT is poor and hidden under cheap and glossy adverting. Roads are continually being dug up for some service diversion or another for various agencies wasting billions rather than share a common services tunnel s in developed first world countries.

There are no traffic police anywhere, and you can get killed by an e-scooter or even a bicycle ridden inside a town centre ridden by FT 99% of the time or FT in big vehicles killing $G children on footways and given nominal sentences and then deported. Will this bring our children back?

$G’s transport administration (like the other government bodies) is bloated with useless overpaid scholars who look at textbooks to get a job done, with the managerial work falsified by FT and actual jobs handled by lowly paid and incompetent FT.

Every action is to be approved many times over by a redundant system of senior staff who collect impossible salaries not even heard of in first world countries. Most of them are FT who are sending the money back to their on countries where they hope to retire in a few years as filthy rich. Why should they cause any issues? They are in it for the money.

The good old days of PWD and its talented LOCAL engineering staff have all been replaced by FT administrative bullies who want you to place a requisition to go to the toilet or apply for leave one week in advance if you are going to be sick.

Is it no wonder the system has gone to pot?

How many people are going to die in trains and on the roads and pedestrian footways because voters are stupid?

  • Selfish Sinkie Syndrome:

    Samuel S:
Yes, Singapore government purposely designed the crossing of causeways inconvenient to discouage Singaporean going JB for shopping and makan. Our MRT performance is dismayed yet our Minister has the gut to say we are best though not the best. All people in Singapore know this cunning styles of PAP government yet they continued to vote for them.

The Woodlands causeway is actually a double-edged sword.

Yes, they purposely make this crossing inconvenient not only to discourage those staying in the north to go into JB for much cheaper groceries (so their NTUC oligopoly can continue to price-gouge Sinkies, besides the obviously monopolistic 3/4 tank rule), but also to force Msian workers/PRs/work permits to pay rental here lah.

If Sinkies can easily and conveniently go into Msia and vie versa, you think all those Msian workers who work here will rent properties here?
Every morning, you already see many Msian bikers travel back and forth, so if they make the transport linkages and immigration across causeway very good, all those Msian will stay at home rather than rent HDB rooms from Sinkies. If that happens, Sinkies HDB sure drop in price, then followed by all the condos and upwards because HDB is the baseline support for all the rest of the property market.

Notice, also why for so many decades, SMRT refuses to build a diagonal train line from North region to Changi airport (i.e. from North to East).
We now have East-West line, then diagonal from city to Punggol, which is named NEL (North-East-Line) but is actually WRONG name, when it should really be South-Central-to-North-East in Punggol.

If they build a line from Woodlands to Changi direct, do you think all the tourist will come into Changi airport? All the cheapo Chinese tourists will rather fly into Msian for tour, then take take MRT to Sinkieland. Also, a lot more tour groups will also plan it such that they fly into Changi sirport but go direct into Msia for tour, so in the end all the Billions spent on building multiple terminals from T1 and now to even future T5 will BENEFIT Msia economy instead? lol.

Thats why Sinkieland is like that, you have to think deeper. The problem is I fear Sinkieland already mature economy now, nothing much to develop anymore and also Sinkies cannot innovate and everything already too high cost for most businesses, so Sinkieland will STAGNATE for many decades to come….wait until all the other regional countries (like Msia, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Phil etc.) grow and slowly reach the high cost equivalent of Sinkieland, then perhaps Sinkieland may be competitively priced and boom again…but that will…

You didn’t mention the Metro at Seoul is also free for Seniors above 60 years. Why PAP Govt also want to squeeze Pioneer Gen?. Why? So that Temasek Holdings also wanna make money also out of Public Utility?
Very generous for paying themselves obscene rewards, but stingy on our Seniors who supported them till now.

  • Warning about ICA officer:

I was recently lectured and inconvenienced by a Chinese ICA officer for bringing common foodstuffs readily available from legal shops in Malaysia when crossing one of our northern land checkpoints from Malaysia. The chap told me I have to get a doctor’s prescription when I brought a few cans of Superfood brand nutrition powder. He threatened to seize the goods but I told him that the goods in question were sold openly in Malaysia and were not presctiption drugs but common nutrition food. The other ICA officers on duty nearby stood idly by and merely watced the farce inspection. I had to endure a bit of humiliation at the ICA’s X-ray machine area as I have not broken any Singapore laws but made to look stupid and guilty.

After I was allowed to leave and proceed to the express bus to take me to Beach Road, I thought that ICA was making things difficult for Sinkies to buy cheaper stuffs when in Malaysia. I suspect all along that crossing the border by land had been made extremely slow and inconvenient for certain reasons and my experience only served to confirm my suspicions.
