Why are there so many Singaporeans earning so little?

I refer to the article “Parliament: Singapore will wither if society is rigid and stratified by class, says PM Lee” (Straits Times, Feb 6).

It states that “Singapore’s politics will turn vicious, its society will fracture and the country will wither if it allows widening income inequalities to create “a rigid and stratified social system””

In this connection, there were 69,800 unemployed residents as of June 2017, and 125,900 residents earning a gross monthly income (including employer CPF contribution) of less than $1,000.

407,400 earn less than $1,500?

There were 407,400 residents (about 19.4 per cent of the total workforce of 2.1 million) whose median gross income was less than $1,500 monthly.

After CPF = less than $1,200?

If we deduct the maximum employee CPF contribution of 20 per cent – the net take-home pay may be less than $1,200.

Arguably, most of the 407,400 people with take-home pay of less than $1,200 may be struggling to make ends meet.

47,000 earn less than $500?

If we breakdown the 407,400 earning less than $1,500 into 47,000 earning less than $500, 125,900 earning less than $1,000 and 234,500 earning less than $1,500 – the financial stress that lower-income workers may be facing may be even worse.

No breakdown into S’poreans & PRs?

Moreover, since permanent residents (PRs) generally earn more than Singaporeans – I shudder to think what the above statistics may look like for Singaporeans.

There is Workfare available for those who earn under $1800 I think. Not sure how much it helps though since a portion of it goes to your CPF.

So funny right, the goondu PM says “widening income inequalities to create “a rigid and stratified social system”. Haven’t we read of x% of workers earning below a certain amount? Haven’t we read of how cleaners and security guards pay has been depressed? And haven’t we also seen that their pay will only go up by a hundred or so in the next few years?

For as long as these good for nothing ministers and MPs are in parliament they will always be talking cock and nothing more. There definitely isn’t a need for so many of them lah but the kiasees can’t seem to find the balls to kick them out, that’s the sad part.

If only the kiasees had more guts……..

But Sinkies deserve it. And I can bet you Sinkies will never learn. They will only regret when they come back from Neitherland every July month.

  • Why no minimum wage?:

PAP is totally against “minimum wage” because it would show the extent of underemployment in Singapore. It would prove PAP has failed Singaporeans. They are only good at paying themselves and their spineless stooges in the Civil Service well.

  • "Up Skill" Employers Instead:

What is the purpose of setting up business in Singapore yet not able to pay employees enough to live without struggling to survive in Singapore?

What is the purpose of having such business here in the 1st place?

Do we really need a business that the society / government have to chip in to help their employees live without struggling to survive?

Shouldn’t we “up the Skill requirement” of employers, to start or do business that can pay employees properly?

    Mr Leong,

I will relate a meeting I had with a prominent Employment Agency this week.

My colleagues noted many workers (local and PR) who claim to want growth and development and advancement. When asked in what way, in which area, the vast majority gave blank stares and faces. When asked why, the same vast majority eventually owned up to the desire for higher pay.

The same is reflected at the work place. Most just want routine and easy jobs of a lower pay scale, not much effort required, much less train or retrain or upgrade. And then they want to be paid like someone a few rungs higher. Such jobs don’t exist.

How many times have you heard this comment of our local work force in the past 15 years? This as been repeated so many times through so many avenues.

  • Most living in quiet anxiety:

They pay themselves top dollars in salaries and bonuses and perks and what have you. They measure themselves with the top earners in the various industries. They obviously think they are entitled and deserving of the top dollars as the other top earners.
They and their circles are plentifully and amply rewarded by design, hoarding more than enough surpluses for worry free lives.
They take “pride” in managing a majority slaving away for them. They come up with all sorts of explanation to justify what they are doing. These are the elites in the 1 to 5 percent of the population, that is, the elected ones and their circles.
We elected them to bully and control us evolving into a state of subservient submissive stupidity.
Oh yes, they will make sure at least you don’t go hungry. They eat their three meals in Shangrilla and you go enjoy your meals at the food court for whatever you could afford or quietly eat your eggs with black sauce and rice at home.
Oh yes you get basic healthcare but how do we compare and measure up to the other first world countries in terms of services and costs as we boastfully claim we are also in the first world league.
You buy second hand cars as they keep changing their new cars.
They keep piling their assets buying and selling properties and stocks.
And you have to think about how to use your next dollar.
You get your fixed annual increments, in the tens of dollars, whilst they get special “who knows” payments and allowances and bonuses they authorised for themselves and their one year total take could be more than your total lifetime CPF savings.
The differential is sinful by any sense of fairplay and logic.
They get big pay, you get small pay, that’s okay as decided by them.
They think they are super smart and irreplaceable and that others are morons.
So there is no need to talk or listen to you.
The thrust of their governance is you elected us, we do what we think is best for you as we like, you stay quiet.
Progress is a continuing process they say, but are we truly progressing?

    @ Rabble-rouser

HILARIOUS POST COMMENT but truthful. In PAPpys world of “ownself-cheque-ownself” political economy, they pay what they like for themselves.

For the peasants and even competing-foreigners-among-themselves, it is the politics of CHEAPER, FASTER AND BETTER but this does NOT APPLY to PAPpys shouting harakiri for all to hear of imagined transgressions or failing. For PAPpys aristocrats, pay is and will always be inversely proportional to their performance.

local work force ? in fact, the white idiots prefer this kind of ‘i say (aristocratic approach), you do (lesser mortar balls)’.

you mean all other FTs don’t have such problem meh. the problem is that daft sinkies are being trained to keep their mouths shut for too long and to be ‘unthinking’ and ‘critical’; that a lot of important things are not being fully thought out for most daft sinkies and they cannot verbalize straight away in a way they feel comfortable (internalized knowledge but lack of expression in a 151th standard environment). This is what I have observed and also being told to me by FTs lar.

  • HarderTruths:

    Supply and demand.

Demand is limited to repetitive factory-like work at any and all government, private and other workplaces. Factory work does not require skills other than to meet minimum work requirements. The pay is always fixed at the lowest that can be obtained for doing that kind of work. Factory work never sees pay increases.

Since the government runs the factories and enforces obedience by using the SPF and ISA there is nothing anyone can do.

All so-called professionals are behaving as factory workers as well. You have to tick a box and that is it – work completed, Correct or incorrect, right or wrong treatment doesn’t matter. As long as you tick the box.

That is why the UK, EU, India, China, Pakistan, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia can send their third world graduates here to fill up the third world factories. The third worlders are also very good at bullshitting and pretending they have done something like having the right qualifications training or experience.

Third world is not Asia – that is racist bullshit. White trash are just as third world and expect to be treated like kings because of skin colour (Don’t believe me? Tell me where do all the white trash stay – in HDB?)

The lazy third world mentality therefore is what keeps $G running like a worn down factory where no one is producing anything worrhwhile and the owner (pappies) keep losing money year after year but take more and more from the workers in as many ways as possible.

More and more workers will come in as their home countries are far worse for them. NNot the clever or able ones who make a good living there. Only the shit workers and ‘professionals’ who are fakes anyway and take the lowest pay because they know they can never do better anywhere else in the world. No other country is that stupid.

So why are $G locals pay so low? My response is $G locals are damn lucky to find any work at all after voting in the evil government. They got the government they deserve.
