PAP’s hissy fit

For over a week now, Minister after Minister has come out to lambast WP’s Sylvia Lim for suggesting that the government floated test balloons to gauge reactions to a GST hike. Sylvia’s words were:

“We do note that in the run-up to the Budget discussion that there were some test balloons being floated out about the fact that the Government needs to raise revenue. And immediately the public seized on the fact that DPM Tharman and perhaps other leaders had earlier said that the Government has enough money for the decade. So the public point out that “hey, you know, is this a contradiction?”

And I rather suspect myself that the Government is stuck with that announcement, otherwise, you know, if their announcement had not been made, perhaps we would be debating a GST hike today.”

Actually, Sylvia Lim was not wrong. In the weeks, and indeed months, leading to budget 2018 announcement, many economists speculated a fairly soon GST increase. Their speculations were based on remarks made by Minsters and the PM about how a GST increase is not a matter of if but when. The reasons given were a larger demographic of aging population and higher healthcare costs urgently pressing on our budget.

Online, many Singaporeans took the Ministers and PM’s remarks as an impending GST increase. The government was roundly criticised for back tracking on an election promise when Tharman himself had said at the last election that our funds were sufficient for another decade.

So you see, Sylvia Lim was not being mischievous nor dishonest, she was merely taking the words and feelings of the population to Parliament. That is her duty as elected MP, to be the voice of the electorate. Regardless that most Singaporeans did not vote for the Workers Party, its MPs have been articulating in Parliament the concerns of many Singaporeans from the reserved Presidential election to the Population White Paper to the current debate on GST increase.

Sylivia Lim made no allegations. She was merely saying all clues appear to point to a more immediate GST increase, but adverse reactions from Singaporeans may have delayed this increase. How the PAP Ministers reacted next beggars belief. They threw a hissy fit and demanded Sylvia Lim apologise to them for articulating her suspicion. The tactics employed by the world highest paid Ministers fall into the cesspool of bullying. Grace Fu threatened Sylvia Lim with a complaint to the Committee of Privileges. Collectively, PAP Ministers used colourful language against Sylvia Lim, calling her “dishonest”, “dishonourable”, even “low class”.
Sylvia Lim once again articulated the thoughts of many Singaporeans when she said, “I do not accept the over-characterisation the PAP ministers have put on my words and intentions, based on their own interpretation, borne out of over-active imagination and oversensitivity.”

It’s time the world highest paid government stop its tantrums and theatrics, and get down to the business of running the country. We are facing disruptive technologies, cyber threats, potential terrorist attacks, runaway cost of living, an inept rail network, rising unemployment and under employment. The list goes on. Singaporeans did not pay this government to throw hissy fits, nor to fix the opposition.

  • A Jobless PMET:

Surprise surprise, one PAP Minister missing in the attacks is PAP Chairman Khaw Boon Wan!
The man who paid $8 for his heart bypass and make everyone buys health insurance to subsidize the rich with rider and bear the cost of huge insurance premium increase and medical cost increase!
The man who supposedly solved the housing problem, yet prices are still expensive and private property are going up, to be followed soon by HDB flats!
The infrastructure supremo and yet MRT is getting worse by the days and his solution is to shut down operations or shorten operations to work on the problem!
It is not uncommon for any ruling party, PAP included, to back track on policies. LKY ever said he promised certain policy but did not introduce or implement the policy, or water-down it after winning GE. PAP back tracked on the CPF withdrawal after Howe Yoon Chong’s constituency was lost to the Opposition. PAP withdrew the graduate mothers schemes after a few years. It is only right to repeal a policy that is not right in the first place.
Our Education and Transport Minister Ng said the hike in airport fee now is to avoid a big hike in the future! – Singaporeans should not be the frogs in the bowl of slowly heating water, soon they be cooked!
PAP Ministers and Heng said they didnt want to confirm or deny if the GST hike would be increased this year because of market sensitivity. What is the difference being open and clarify once the rumour is circulating and announcing same in Parliament. Didnt Tharman and PAP Ministers denied any GST hikes in the 2015GE?
Everyone knows that GST and tax would have to go up in one way or another because ours is one of the lowest in the world! So, PAP is telling us in advance to “acclimitize” us, and sad to say, most Singaporeans will ultimately let PAP bulldoze through all unpopular policies.

The (over)reactions of the PAP turkeys actually says a lot. It shows that they know they are guilty of the GST hike and want to try and make themselves look like victims by demanding that Sylvia apologise over her suspicion.

Makes them look like dafts doesn’t it? It’s just like when you are caught doing something you shouldn’t and then panicking coming up with all sorts of nonsensical reasons ha ha ha.

  • Haigen Diaz:

The Party have lost any hint of objectivity long time ago, building a mountain out of nothing to attack Sylvia and should be ashamed. A clear example of the party before country. It’s indisputable that we no longer have Govt. that is capable of working on behalf of the people. This whole thing was a farce from the beginning. When they investigate their own, they basically fluff the pillows on the couch and call it a day. But when they investigate the oppositions, they flip the couch and turn the dust-mites into bed-bugs. The threat of ‘Committee of Privileges’ have insulted the intelligence and demonstrated an obstructions of their Constitutional duties and their oaths to Singaporeans.

why spend so much taxpayer resources arguing about SL’s casual remark at all?

it seems our scholar-miws are only good at NICKPICKING.
maybe,JUST MAYBE,they ARE TRYING TO avoid the real ISSUE ON HAND???

  • Fake news originator:

Singapore judiciary system is noted for its efficacy to go after villians. Why r they not activated to moor down the fake news villians? Grace Fu has ungraciously fooled the electorate by shifting the focus of fake news villians to a truth telling champion. whatt a twisted world. Democracy nepotically cooked to death and left to stink as Communist dressed up as trillionaires tycoons but power in Commo while democracy degenerated to demoncracratic nepotism. Truth becomes plpised to be fake and faker self honoured to keep the fakes themselves and eradicate the fakers stenched truth.

This government behaves like school yard bullies, yet sees fit to reward themselves with world highest salaries for any government. Shame on them, and shame on those who continue to vote in an expensive yet inept government who spends more time and energy fixing the opposition than on fixing the country’s problems. If our problems can be fixed just by taxing citizens more and more, we don’t need to pay out of this world salaries for out of this world “talents”.
