Sporting Singapore: How Elite Sporting Events are Boosting Tourism

Some of the world’s top athletes will be descending on Singapore next year, as the Lion City plays host to the Super League Triathlon. Brainchild of former triathlon world champion Chris McCormack, this new TV-friendly series will feature only the very best men and women from the world of triathlon including, of course, double Olympic champion Alistair Brownlee from the UK and, on the women’s side, the all-conquering Gwen Jorgensen of the US. With events in Australia, Great Britain and South Africa, this is a truly global sporting phenomenon – with Singapore at its core.

Cultural Heart

So, what can our intrepid triathletes expect from their Singapore experience? Well, with the event taking place over several days – elite men’s and women’s races, as well as events catering to juniors and amateurs – there’ll be plenty of time to drink in the culture. There are the beautiful gardens by the bay, as well as zoos, bird sanctuaries, museums and fountains.

Singapore also has a vibrant street food scene that has been fed by services like Deliveroo, serving up a true taste of Southeast Asia right to hotel doorsteps. So, when spectators and athletes alike are – no doubt – in need of a refuelling after such a gruelling event, they’ll have further opportunity to sample Singaporean culture.

Sports Scene

It’s not just the world’s top triathletes who will be travelling to Singapore over the next few years. With the country set to play host to the Women’s World Tennis Finals later this year and the thrilling Singapore night race fast becoming a jewel in the F1 crown, the Lion City is turning into an international sporting hub. With a host of sports fans from all over the globe eager to cheer on their heroes, such stellar events have given rise to a tourism boom, with more and more travellers keen to explore the unique delights of this majestic city-state.

Tourist Trap

And it’s not just sports fans flocking to the Lion City. Singapore has seen a huge surge in tourism over the last ten years, with a whopping seventeen million visitors spending a staggering twenty-five billion dollars in 2016 alone. This trend sees no signs of abating, with Singapore fast becoming one of the most popular tourist destinations in Southeast Asia.

It’s not just grandiose sporting events attracting the masses: an ever-growing number of festive and cultural events now dominate the calendar. There are the spectacular Chinese New Year celebrations, with stunning fireworks displays, majestic floats, street performers and food vendors. In the summertime there are the dragon-boat races – a thrilling high-octane spectacle held in the Marina Bay. In Autumn there is the stunning festival of lights, a traditional Hindu celebration, which sees Singapore’s Little India festooned with lights, and packed full of cultural entertainment and traditional Indian cuisine.

On the Map

All this and more has seen Singapore become the beating heart of Southeast Asia. And, whether it’s thrilling sporting events or spectacular cultural celebrations, one thing’s for sure: few places do it better than Singapore.

    Ha-ha-ha-ha! S’pore pays homage to world class elite sporting events but the people within S’pore are among the sickest & the least healthy. Go to any Bus Interchange or Polyclinics/Public Hospitals – you’ll see masses of sick & unhealthy S’poreans shuffling about; amputees in wheelchairs selling tissue pouches, the elderly assisted using tong-kat (walking stick) or mobility vehicles, etc.
    The reasons are simply:
    * One of the highest cost of living places in the world;
    * Lack of affordable healthcare schemes/medical facilities;
    * Poor consumption due to poor wages & high costs;
    * Poor nutritional habits – unable to afford good proteins (mainly meat), overindulge in cheap carbohydrates (mainly rice) & low quality snacks (fried foods, sweets buns, cakes, etc); &
    * Lack of time for exercise – due to long working hours & low pay, people in S’pore are always tired out, exhausted, etc. Men have 8 month pregnant belly pouches; the women’s backside bigger than usual – all signally an unhealthy disposition.
    Truth is that S’pore has a short supply of;
    * Time,
    * money,
    * affordable costs &
    * a stress-free eco-system to pursue dreams.
    Even Joseph Schooling had to get out of S’pore in order to achieve his personal dream of winning an Olympic Gold medal. S’pore Soccer World Cup 2010 qualification dream had come & gone with a whimper – current soccer team can’t even beat minnows in our own backyard!

  • Why bother anymore:

    But our own sg grown sportsmen n women are side stepped in favour of foreign ones, who arent making much difference with all the $$$ and pluses given to them.
    Just look at the dismal show of the sg team at the commonwealth games 2018 australia.

    Will there be free TV coverage and online streamings for the various events? Australia 7Plus is broadcasting all major Commonwealth Games 2018 events FREE to their audiences. Despite that, all their events are well attended, no need to get fake audience to show face.

    Still got the annual F1 although attendances have fallen. There was some tennis tournament that ended too with China hosting from next year.

    If we could somehow bring in popular football clubs regularly it would be great. If only our local football was better, I still remember the good old days when we were in the Semi Pro league and both Brunei and Penang were the whipping boys season after season!

    Good quality gyms are simply too expensive and the public ones are overcrowded with poor quality equipment and broken stuff that never seems to get repaired.
    The other problem is the lack of greenhouses. It can bee that expensive to grow vegetables instead of relying on Malaysia and other countries.
    Also the bosses’ attitudes that excercise and good health are your problem rather than a business investment. Healthy workers are cheaper and more profitable

    WHAT SINGAPORE IS MOST SHORT OF ARE SINGAPOREANS WITH A SPINE. THAT IS WHY MOST SINGAPOREANS ARE JUST STUPID AND/OR MEDIOCRE.

  • Rabble-rouser:

    @ Amos proved PAP hypocrisy:
    Spine was surgically removed upon Operation Coldstore. Subsequent Stop @ 2 policy, Mother Tongue policy sent native S’poreans packing – many emigrating to the West for a more rewarding life. The PAP had been stealthily replacing S’poreans with M’sian Chinese who were more China-Chauvinistic in values & beliefs, more obedient & more willing to lick the bottom of PAP’s boots when fed with table scraps. In addition, those native S’poreans left were recent immigrants from China pre & post-WW2 who came to S’pore with little in their pockets. They were PAP staunchest supporters! As they came with nothing, so as long as the PAP provided them with the barest of basic essentials ie. HDB flats, free education (upto pre-university for their kids, ‘subsidized’ medical, etc – they’re happy like farked!
    In the last 4 decade, each economic crisis (’85 Pan-EL crisis, ’98 Asian Currency crisis, ’08 Global Financial crisis – there were an outpouring of S’poreans with educational qualifications, skillset & capital resources who left S’pore for greener pastures elsewhere. Even your namesake Amos Yee was smart enough to abscond from S’pore to the US using political asylum channels. The PAP was so stupid to jail a 16 year old for his political beliefs when the West would view him as immature & a juvenile delinquent. This gave him the justification to seek political asylum in the West.
    Like whiskey distillation process, the best stuff were all exported (like Johnny Walker whiskey) leaving the dregs (bottom of the barrel) which are toxic & can leave you blind if you drink it. That is why the PAP were so blind as well as those remaining inside their system eg. THAT IS WHY MOST SINGAPOREANS ARE JUST STUPID AND/OR MEDIOCRE.

    LOL! And that is PAP’s ‘TOO CLEVER BY HALF’ type of policies. Like LKY’s Stop at 2 policy which was only felt after 50 years down the road as S’pore now faces a demographic time bomb of PAP’s creation. The big problems looming are:
    * Time decay of HDB flat’s 99 year leases as many are now hitting their 40 year mark; retirees with ageing HDB flats now can’t sell their flats to downgrade;
    * Enbloc Bubble mania pushing private property prices to the Stratosphere – who can really afford them?
    Or the wage repression & slave-like working conditions from S’pore employers re: “the bosses’ attitudes that excercise and good health are your problem rather than a business investment.” This also stemmed from LKY’s ‘Who doesn’t want to collect more money? philosophy’. In S’pore, costs rise faster than wage increments leaving wage earners & small business operators (who are price takers) unable to keep up with S’pore “Amazing Race” of relentless inflation where no one wins except the PAP with their 21 month bonuses. There’s a reason for S’pore title of MOST EXPENSIVE CITY TO LIVE.
    But the most painful realisation is that the son (PM LHL) either can’t or is unwilling to undo/correct his father’s mistakes. Instead he further compounds his old man’s errors through:
    * Foreigner imports that strain & overloads the Infrastructure limits. Re:”Good quality gyms are simply too expensive and the public ones are overcrowded with poor quality equipment and broken stuff that never seems to get repaired.” Same goes for hospital, public transportation, schools, 30% water rate increases, etc.
    * State-owned investments that had gone wrong (PM LHL/wife HC) dumping losses onto the public – TH/GIC investment failures = CPF minimum retirement sum requirement; Trump’s tax cuts = impending GST increase; LNG Terminal/CoGen capacity increase Malinvestments = consumers paying higher electricity rates, etc.
    PAP needs to be voted out! Or else you’ll all die!
