More fresh graduates unemployed while government exercises ‘selective flexibility’ in allowing in foreign talents

After a shock revelation that more young people were turning to drive for GRAB and Uber as a full-time career, a Graduate Employment Survey released on Tuesday (3 Apr) painted a dismal picture for graduates of Private Universities.

While the overall employment rate seems healthy at 79%, only 47.4% of such graduates found full-time, permanent employment within six months of graduation. This implied that almost one in three graduates (the difference between 79% and 47.4%) had to  resorted to freelance and part-time jobs.

For the luckier ones who have managed to secure full-time employment, the median gross monthly salary was S$2,650 – a mere 7% higher than that of the $2,480 commanded by polytechnic graduates who have served NS.

Given that that only 37% of the graduating cohort responded to the survey, the actual situation could have been much worse. While the survey was anonymous, the unemployed graduates were more likely to shy away from providing details as they would be more likely to want to avoid talking about their situation.

Does MOM’s Fair Consideration Framework work?

Judging from official statistics given by the Ministry of Manpower, the number of Employment Pass (EP) holders rose by 10.6% in the span of 4 years from 2012 to 2016. To level the playing field for Singaporeans, employers are required to advertise on the national jobs bank for 14 days before they are able to submit an EP application.

Yet, the then Minister for Manpower Tan Chuan Jin admitted in 2014 that his ministry was not able to “directly track” the number of applications submitted by Singaporeans. To make matters worse, the number of non-compliance has doubled in the span of a year with more than 500 firms having been put on the watchlist in 2018 for unfairly favouring foreigners, up from 250 in 2017.

Instead of imposing tighter measures – such as those in Australia where companies are required to prove that a local is unable to do the job before a foreign work visa is granted to an overseas applicant – the MOM has taken a more liberal approach to the approval of work passes.

Minister Lim Swee Say said at a dialogue organised last month by the Singapore National Employers Federation that the MOM allows for “selective flexibility” in bringing in foreign talents as these foreign PMETs have skills in which Singaporean PMETs “lack”. He added that the MOM approves about 80% of EP applications.

Blackbox: Widening income gap in Singapore a “worry”

Just last week, market research consultancy Blackbox published a survey which showed that 69% of Singaporeans feel that income inequality has worsened over the past 5 years while 52% think that current government policies to address inequality were ineffective. Additionally, 90% of Singaporeans youths feel anxious about the unequal distribution of income.

While the direct impact has yet to be felt, the overall picture does not look pretty with limited action from the government. In fact, it would seem that the collective result of graduate underemployment and underemployment would only make this inequality worse in time to come.

What do you think?

actually the statistics must be clear about graduates are citizens or graduates are aliens FTs PRs.

if about aliens FTs PRs then what is the problem? they can balek kampong and still survive.

if about citizens then the more the merrier. UNTIL 70% sheep wakes up and stops voting pap nothing is going to improve in dying Singapore.

SO let the citizen joblessness continue. LET more local born males with NSF NSR liabilities be jobless especially the graduates.

the pap ingrained bo bian mentality of 70% sheep cannot be removed without more of 70% sheep being jobless especially the male graduates with NSF NSR liabilities. JUST note pap malaysian puthu pap malaysian cow no NSF NSR but paid S$m courtesy of 70% sheep.

SO 70% sheep can continue to drive GRAB. it is still a job. lagi best if GRAB also cannot absorb any more 70% sheep. then happiness once again because chance for Singapore to recover from current decay.

US of A needs FT nurses and doctors. Especially in Western and Midwestern underserved states and Indian(meaning native Americans) reservation.
Nurses can make US$45 an hour to US$55 an hour depending on specialty area. General Practitioner Doctor make average US$120 per visit regular physical exam. See about 3 patients an hour in a clinic setting. My hospital is staffed with 60 percent Phinoy nurses. So Singaporeans should not drive taxis. Get over here. We are hiring here in the USA.

Only country on planet Earth that allows foreigners to work here easily. Even third world countries will block foreigners but not Sinkingpoor.

Try to work in other countries and their immigration dept will tell you to XXXX off even if you are a graduate from world’s top Universities.

  • fake news:

Many people are unaware of the fake news that “foreign workers create jobs for locals”.

Only business owners or their foreign top brass can generate jobs for locals. But even then, due to the super liberal open door policy of allowing all levels of foreign PMETs to come into Sg, some of these business owners prefer to take in their own foreign staffs to work here – need not be cheaper than a local staff or better qualified.

Unlike our generation where we can find jobs readily suited to our aptitude and interest, nowadays our children are competing against the whole world in their own country, be they from developed countries or developing ones. When our children try to work in other countries, their government deny them work visas. Foreign countries protect their citizens rice bowls zealously but not our government. Countries like USA, Australia, Europe, Thailand, M’sia, Indonesia, etc do not readily allow foreigners to work there, yet all sorts of foreigners can work in Singapore.

    Sad for our children.

I hope the young people wake up and see the situation and not blindly vote PAP due to being kiasee like the older generation.

All these motherhood statements of tightening this, setting up that have failed, they were never meant to level the playing field in the first place. If the government was really doing its job then the number of S and E pass holders would be less than 100k respectively.

If you do not even make the attempt to help Singaporeans by actuvely seeking to reduce the alien contingent then all you have done is lip service.

But it’s fine for the 70% gratitude idiots. Let yur gratitude flow yet again in the next GE, it seems you bodohs are too kiasee to think.

New uni graduates or those who are about to graduate from uni should read this piece written by a private uni local graduate (who graduated over 8 years ago) & wrote this:
    Link: https://steemit.com/life/@cheah/the-death-of-the-singapore-dream
Excerpts: “I grew up on the Singapore Dream. Study hard, get good grades, go to a good school, get a good degree, get a good job. Be a doctor, lawyer, engineer, some high-status PMET with an enviable pay package and guaranteed Central Provident Fund contributions. Then, and only then, will you be successful.
…I graduated near the top of the school in the top fifteen percent of my cohort…[But]
    EIGHT YEARS OF SILENCE
I’ve sent out dozens, hundreds of resumes. Every month, every week, every day, I applied for job after job after job, hoping that someone would notice. Until then, I crunched numbers and copied clauses, wrote story after story, and picked up whatever freelance job and short-term contract job I could find.
I did this for eight years.
In eight years, I received nothing.
For most Singaporeans, it doesn’t matter. Study hard, get into a good school, get a good degree, and with a modicum of presentation and soft skills, you’ll have a good job and a career.
But if that doesn’t work out… what then?
The Singapore Dream is dead to me. But I’m not going to give up, and I will not surrender my own dream.”
It’s a thoroughly sad & extremely pessimistic piece reflecting on the true life situation of a S’pore local graduate. When you don’t have the means to fulfill your dream, life not worth living for. Either you get out of S’pore, out of your comfort zone or acknowledge your helplessness is a factor of the political situation. Voters deserved the govt that they voted for.

Degree inflation is not a new phenomenon. Given the fact that population increases here are being driven by record levels of FT imports, it is necessary to ask why we continue to import them in numbers far greater than the labor market can assimilate. We’ve become a brain dead society that relies too much on a worthless piece of credentials. The manufacturing sector is doing away with a lot of jobs though automation too; in the end, it removes a lot of man-hours and requires much more specialized labor (higher education) as well. Instead businesses, corporations do all hiring via a software program…At no point until an actual interview is conducted to people actually talk to another human being.. Degrees also might signal that job applicants come from a similar socioeconomic, racial, class, and social network background as the person selecting job applicants which plays into everything from unconscious preferences for people like oneself, to organizational “fit.” The next thing will be needing a bachelor’s degree to work at MacDonald’s. Politically correct way of stating too many useless degrees out there and 1/2 of millennial’s cannot balance a check book or make economic sense of their spending sprees.
Common sense courses should be also be a prerequisite to their faculties.

Nurses and Doctors don’t need to be graduate from top universities to get green card in USA.
Nurses just need to pass the NCLEX. Doctors just need to pass USMLE (United States Medical License Exam) and go through a residency program.
These are two of the best recession – proof professions. We have doctors from Pakistan, India, Middle East Countries, Carribean, China etc. from Universities you have never heard of, opening up practices, making good money.
ER Physicians make US$250000 to US$300000 per year. The health care field is definitely the profession that FT are truly needed in every country.
So, you have the privilege to choose where you want to go. Therefore, make the most of your talent and go where you will receive the most return (monetary, appreciation, satisfaction or otherwise).
Don’t waste your life in Sinkapoor.

aiyoh. daft sinkies cost of investment on education (also includes all inherent costs of upbringing) is much more expensive here lar. but white idiots do not mind importing FTs (by hundreds of shiploads) – especially many from those lower cost countries) to outcompete with daft sinkies leh.

  • So what else is new?:

Not surprised. The Singapore education system is a “big success” for PAP. Graduates are “brainwashed” to be stupid and/or spineless. Those “not converted” are “terrorized” into silence and compliance by the PLIANT judicial system.

this is the results of ownself-check-ownself one curry party function where the jobs of white idiots are ‘protected’ (don’t want competition under one party curry party) and the white idiots do not mind importing FTs by the shiploads in the name of competition for the average daft sinkies who have to fight for the remainder crumbs and yet paying the white idiotic policies in expensive dues (in the form of monopolized bao jiak services or taxes) to support the white idiotic high salaries.

the white idiots import FTs by the shiploads so that all those daft sinkies outside their circle will have to compete and yet have to pay whatever dues the white idiots decide they should pay resulting from all the ownself-check-ownself policies.

A bit of clarification. My apologies.

The US do not accept doctors from “Universities you have never heard of” unlike here in Singapore. I don’t question the academic qualifications of foreign doctors nor the stringency of USMLE. In fact we have foreign doctors who are placed into a residency program being superior to US Medical School graduates.

    @ Haigen-diaz

I am a true blue Singaporean. Have been a US green card for almost 15 years – still holding on to Singapore Passport.
Came to US for med school, to get my medical license and to fulfill my American dream after going through VJC and NS.
I have worked with Doctors who graduated from Down Medical College in Karachi Pakistan, Cairo University in Egypt etc., at the US VA (Veterans Affairs) hospitals and other government hospitals/agencies. Their whole purpose is to get the green card.
The VA facilities are so short staffed that they are willing to accept doctors from ‘Universities that we have never heard of’.
Anyway, I encourage Singaporean Doctors and Nurses to give yourselves the opportunity to make a change. There is nothing to loose. You can still return to Sinkapoor if there is a change in government when PAP looses the election.
