Has HDB been used as a political tool for votes?

I refer to the article “HDB chief suggests buyers should pay less for resale flats with shorter leases” (Yahoo News, Apr 11).

It states that “And you must remember that actually their children will go on to buy an affordable flat from me. Correct? Now how do you make sure they can buy back an affordable flat from me? Eventually you have to recycle the land. You understand? So, I am trying to paint that broader picture.”

Arguably, how can our children “buy back an affordable flat from me (HDB?)”, when the land component of new BTO flats are charged at market rates now, and into the future?

Singaporeans used to be told in our earlier electoral history that if you vote otherwise – your flats will not be upgraded.

And also HDB as an “asset enhancement policy” was touted.

Now, of late – we seem to be bombarded with the veiled threat that your flats will decline in value to zero as they approach the end of the 99-year lease. Is it not in a sense – hinting that if you vote otherwise – your flats may not be given priority for “en-bloc” under SERS!

  • C'est la vie:

HDB “affordable” homes along with sweets and all things nice have been the tool to fool the Singlish speaking stooges for many a chapter in the ever increasing and effective tale of the fools whom not only believed everything they were told, but they went on to perpetuate and promote the “fable” too.

Hence, the “asset enhancing” tale grew and grew, whilst their “leases” got shorter and shorter.

The day of reckoning for many of these Singlishers are fast approaching and soon their “homes” will be both worthless and no longer theirs, along with a huge chunk of their CPF contributions !!!

    A triple whammy indeed !!!

I read an interesting news today. Malaysian food stalls are giving out free burgers, free bowls of pan mee, bak ku teh to encourage voters to vote.

Malaysia dat boleh lah. Here in Sinkland, before you vote you get free transport and free chicken rice already. They feed you until you know how to vote. Boleh dat?

  • opposition dude:

The PAP has always used threats and bribery to ensure the gongkias vote for them. Remember how they loved telling us that opposition parties will raid the reserves and ruin Singapore? And how your estate will be a slum if an opposition party wins it? Oh yes I’m sure you remember those well even if you do not actively keep track of political events.

HDB flats have not been affordable for decades, it’s just the PAP saying they are affordable. How can something be affordable when you have a 25 year home loan to pay off? How can something affordable take so damn long to pay off right? But don’t tell the kiasees this fact for they will think you are insane for doing so.

And the good bit is that we don’t even have to wait for 99 years to come around before flat prices start falling. Those flats built in 1967 in both Toa Payoh and Queenstown aren’t selling for as much as you think they are. A 3 room Toa Payoh goes for below 300k as an example. Cheap sia!

now,we wait to see if HDBs are really an ‘ASSET’ to the poor old sgs.

we want to see PAP ministers keep their words.

in any case, this is indeed the ONLY REMAINING ASSET LEFT FOR MANY A POOR SG after their CPF has been sucked dry.

not helping to protect this last asset of the poor reflects the total hypocrisy of this govt.

PS; extend the leasehold of older HDBs OWNED BY SGS.

  • Ali Baba:

PAP had been using all kinds of dirty tactics, from gerrymandering, shifting of wards, fakes and even threats to gain advantages in GE, throughout. HDB cases helped them to gain a lot of weights, for they knew, majority of the population are easily deceived, as in their old age, retire from their usual income, very much depended on the only property to depend on. These devils know no boundaries in cheating and deceiving us, the commoners. Wake up, and vote the devils out, so that new governors can assist us to make changes.

  • Food for thought:

Yes, PAP is very good in using all tools to marginalize opposition and win votes – HDB flat policy is one tool.
PAP controls supply and imports humongous number of immigrants, property prices rise.
Singaporeans buy HDB flats at a so called subsidized rate with all the rules and regulations imposed and are happy.
Now PRs and new citizens are buying resale flats and condo and many rent out to Singaporean families or singles. The rental yield of flat can be as high as 7%!
The remarks by Lawrence Wong and his Yes men and women are “test balloons”.
The private property owners can enbloc at huge profits. Ask PM Lee and other owners how much they paid for their Mandarin Gardens condo. Mandarin Gardens is now asking for $2.3 billion for enbloc buyer.
PAP will and can continue boosting property prices including HDB flats if their votes are at risk.
The rich will then hoard properties and the not-so-rich will buy bigger HDB flats and the younger generation will have to rent or borrow huge amount to buy even a 2 room flat.
Maybe PAP will devalue S$ like what Japan does – to make Singapore property prices at record high look relatively cheaper to foreign investors.
