Without the breakdown of the jobs statistics into Singaporeans, PRs and foreigners – how do we know the statistics for Singaporeans?

I refer to the article “PM Lee’s May Day message: Good prospects for economy this year but trade tensions a cause for concern” (Straits Times, Apr 30).

It states that “Productivity growth last year reached its highest in seven years, and more jobs were created, including higher-paying ones”.

According to the Ministry of Manpower’s (MOM) Labour Market Advance Release First Quarter 2018, released on 27 April – total employment (excluding foreign domestic workers (FDW)) decreased by 12,800 jobs from 1 January 2017 to 31 March 2018.

As there is no breakdown of the total employment decrease into Singaporeans, permanent residents (PRs) and foreigners – how many of the 12,800 jobs decrease were Singaporeans (if any)?

According to the article “Population likely to be ‘significantly below’ 6.9m by 2030” (Straits Times, Mar 2) – last year, the number of new citizens and permanent residents (PRs) granted was 22,076 and 31,849, respectively.

So, if we account for the foreign workers who were reclassified as resident workers when they became PRs or new citizens – what is the “real” Singaporean job losses (if any) in the last five quarters?

As to “His message comes after the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said last Friday that while unemployment rates have declined from a year ago, further improvement will be harder to achieve.

The resident unemployment rate has dropped to 2.8 per cent in the first quarter of the year, a two-year low, while the seasonally adjusted overall unemployment rate also dipped, from 2.1 per cent in the preceding quarter to 2 per cent for the first quarter of this year” – why is there no mention that the citizens’ unemployment rate has actually remained unchanged at 3.0 per cent, instead of the declines in the overall and resident unemployment rates?

Similarly, if we account for the foreign workers who were reclassified as resident workers when they became PRs or citizens – what is the “real” unemployment rate for Singaporeans?

The claim of 3% growth is just a fig leaf. No one actually believes it. A well-managed, or designed global economy would be based on the concept of prosperity without growth.
Far be it from the likes of Pinkie and his economic team to understand such matters. He will pick up favorable trends such as current growth as proof of his performance and unfavorable data as fake news. This strategy depends on cultivating clueless voters, which we seem to have in embarrassing abundance but it looks like this strategy is starting to wear thin. Sweden and Poland have GDP’s slightly less than 3 percent of Singapore. For a mature economy to achieve this massive growth would create a hyper-inflation that defeats its gains! That aside, to reproduce internal growth the size of Singapore would be impossible without raising wages. Well, the consumers may be the top 10 percentile, not be the minimum wage workers, so the demand may still be satisfied increasing the “growth in output — with increasing disparity in income likely to lead to more entrenched poverty. ’Growth’ has always been assumed necessary because an economy needs to ‘grow’ to support a growing population. So, if we could get population growth in check a lot of other problems–including our finite resource supply–would take care of themselves. If can have access to all statistical data out there, but it take only common sense to know that GDP growth does not benefit all of us. And so inequality increases from both ends, the rich get richer, the poor get poorer. We are already feeling the effects in the surge of real estate prices, which is an additional cost to consumers of groceries to medical care. The losers are those who had been able to afford to live in the now gentrified HDB areas, the top level finding lesser housing while the marginal ones are now on the streets. The real problem is inequality, in income, wealth, property and power. Who cares is the economy grows if the vast amount of that goes to a few. That despite high liquidity growth has not surged in recent years is evidence that liquidity is not enough. And the increasing impoverishment of the middle and lower classes which will be exacerbated by the future GST tax reform will curtail demand. How can any of us possibly fight back against this insanity when truth itself no longer seems to matter?

  • who are the well off in SG?:

That has always the idea of the PAP – to obfuscate the data and hide them from the Sinkies and lie about the true situation of Singapore so as to enable them to get away from running Singapore in the own self interest and to enrich themselves.

Who are the most well off in Singapore? The PAP elites.

How did they derive their wealth?

By rewarding themselves with humongous salaries and absurd bonuses with tax payers’ money, together with fiscal policies that favors the rich and those with high income (themselves) while the majority of the lower income are made to bear a disproportionate portion of the tax burden through regressive taxes such as GST, water tax, electricity tax, low interests received for our CPF savings, etc, etc.

Always arguing why they deserved to be paid well, while always telling the rest of Singaporeans why they have to make sacrifices, oblivious to the acute suffering of many of them.

How do the majority of Singaporeans fair? Life of struggle with the longest working hours in the world and constant struggle to make ends meet, expensive and cramped living space, increasingly precarious job prospects and bleak retirement life and suffering.

Now you understand why they have been so ruthless in their tyrannical rule? To enable them to protect themselves and their interests. When have they put Singaporeans before themselves?

  • opposition dude:

Let’s be frank about this one, do you really believe the unemployment rate is 3% as reported every quarter?

With all the work permit, S and E Pass non Singaporeans around taking up so many jobs how can it just be a low 3%, isn’t that common sense?

How it works is PAP classifies anyone with a part time job, freelancer as working. So the word working is very, VERY broad. I had a friend who was working as a surveyor for MOM for a few months and he told me that if the person being surveyed was even working a single hour in the past week then he/she is considered as employed.

This is why statistics look rosy and the unemployment rate is forever at 3%. PAP never reports the rate for Singaporeans since it’s an embarrassing number anyway. So the creative term Singapore residents is conjured up to make the unemployment rate look low.

the 30% in TRE has it right. pap FAKE news about the state of local born employment is truly fake.

just noticed pap IBs are tracking this post. Hmm. nobody kicks at a dea puppy. pap IBs are active here means the 30% is onto something significant.

this post, and the one about the unfortunate death of an NSF PTE, seem to be very active with pap IBs trying to distract sway or BS further.

the 30% in TRE ain’t going to let it happen.

Singaporeans mostly lack the intelligence to want to know the breakdown.

It explains why the powers that be has been able to get away with the Opacity in statistics for decades.

    Singapore is hopeless case.
    Singaporeans are the cause.
