Chan Chun Sing echos PM Lee and says that Singapore is “closely following” Malaysian elections

Chan Chun Sing

On Thursday (10 May), a Channel News Asia article quoted Minister for Trade and Industry Chan Chun Sing as saying that the Singapore Government is “closely following” developments in Malaysia following the shock election. He added that the two countries share a “longstanding and broad-ranging relationships” and developments across the causeway could have a “direct or indirect impact” on Singapore given the proximity.

Although the opposition coalition Pakatan Harapan (PH) had won 113 out of the 222 seats needed to form the government, there were some delays in swearing coalition leader and former Prime Minister Tun Mohamad  Mahathir in as the country’s new Prime Minister. While outgoing Prime Minister Najib Razak had conceded defeat, he said that there was no party which won the clear mandate and asked the King of Malaysia Muhammad V to decide on who should be the country’s next Prime Minister.

This was because PH was not a political party by itself but a coalition made up of 4 different parties – the Democratic Action Party, the People’s Justice Party, the National Trust Party, and the Malaysian United Indigenous Party. The biggest winner in this election was the People’s Justice Party which won 104 seats out of 222. Although this was better than the Barisan Nasional coalition showing, it also fell short of the 111 required to form the government.

Minister Chan said that the politics in Malaysia were for “Malaysians to decide” and that the Singapore government is looking forward to “developing an equally constructive relationship with the next Malaysian government, and to work with it to take our bilateral ties forward and benefit both our peoples.”

Interestingly, the comments made by Minister Chan were a mirror image of what the Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong had said in a Facebook post earlier that morning.

MSM praises Chan for his “sharp intellect” but netizens not impressed

Prior to assuming the role of Minister for Trade and Industry, Chan was the labour chief and the Secretary-General of the National Union Trades Congress.

In a farewell article by the Straits Times last Wednesday (2 May), several union members were quoted as praising Chan for his intellect. Mohamad Nazir Sani was quoted as saying that Chan had an ability to “listen to a crowd, taking in views and questions all at once, then distilling them and responding to issues raised” without using notes. before adding his views that Chan was an “organised and sharp thinker”.

Despite the praise from the mainstream media, netizens seem to have reacted different to Chan after his comments.

One Netizen Anu Banu said on the Channel NewsAsia Facebook Page on Chan’s comments: “Really? Just repeating what the PM said, and just stating what all the Singaporeans obviously know” before speculating that Chan “could be the next PM”. This was echoed by another netizen Jay Lam who commented that Chan used the “exact same words used by [PM Lee]” and asked if Chan was a “bloody parrot in human disguise”.

Other netizens also recalled how Mahathir was a strong nationalistic leader who was not the easiest to deal with. One Wibowo Kelvin said that “relations [with Malaysia] will not be easy [moving forward] under a tough, nationalistic leader” while Jeremy Ng commented that “keechiu now also must fight Dr M whom until now only LKY could do it”.

In a SCMP article, former TODAY newspaper editor P N Balji was quoted as saying that Singapore is a small state ”and it’s a very tricky world out there”. The article then concluded that while the three key contenders had varying roles across ministries, they had “yet to show whether they possess the statecraft required to helm the city state – which prides itself for being friends with all major powers. ”

Makes me want to puke. Sharp intellect but a parrot?

As labor chief, what did he actually do for workers? Just making nice sounding speeches but lip service only?

No big organization will hire a zero experience guy like him. If he’s so good then get out to the real world to prove it.

    Stop hiding in Government.

More to come from Singapore;s 4th PM! This bugger has to try his best to convince the dafts you know. What he doesn’t realise is that a good number of dafts are older than him and have more life experience than he does. Eaten way more salt than boy boy Chan has eaten rice you know.

We only have to blame the useless and spineless civil servants for giving access to all the opportunities of letting him become first a president scholar and thereafter climb the defence ministry.

Singapore will be totally ruined should he be given further powers.

    what do we think?

we think this pap Lj kee chiu paper general is an embarrassment. listen to him speak. even our 6 years old neice and 7 years old nephew speak better. it is an utter amazement such expensively educated pap Lj at taxpayer expense in expensive england cannot string a sentence without grandma mistakes.

    what do we think?

we think this pap Lj kee chiu paper general, and the pap Lj ong guy whom we ALJUNIED folks rejected GE2011 and the pap Lj heng guy who is 2nd stroke akan datang, all no balls to stand in SRC. NOT one of them is ever tested in SRC. all of them in parleement courtesy of backside entry GRC.

even though najib lost najib umno to Dr Mahatir, at the very least najib was able to win the constituency he stood in, by a credible margin.

in comparison, the pap Lj kee chiu paper general, and the pap Lj ong and the pap Lj heng stroke, are all good to fake news but utterly useless in truth.

We’re witnessing the end-stage of another political party which is incapable of governing, having abrogated that duty 14 years ago. It reeked of bad judgement of epic proportions and hasn’t even gotten around to facing real issues yet. Instead, they focused upon enriching a scintilla of the population, while our middle class is vanishing in our nation, and the younger generations are hit especially hard with a trifecta of a weak and competitive job market, and an exploding cost of living. The Govt has consistently used its’ own manufactured facts, and that tactic worked well enough for them to hoodwink many, if not most, of those who voted for them.

The grin on Dr. Mahathir’s face during his inauguration looked to me like a cat who ate the canary while our PM is still nonchalantly tweeting – “I thought I saw a pussycat?” We have not seen the worst from Dr. Mahathir (or Anwar) yet, and need to pivot on the damage done by PM Lee’s crony selection of 4G leaders. It’s going to be rough. Are we not looking in the face of a new world order in which strong leadership like Trump, Xi Jinping, Putin, Kim Jong Un, Mahathir or whoever else thinks can change a failed leadership? The age of “alternative change” has begun. It was a promise of the future. This 92 years old is going to snarl up Singapore, the country and the PAP/Govt. God help us all! Yes, and our PM is the disaster!

“CLOSELY FOLLOWING” THE MALAYSIAN ELECTION OUTCOME? I thought it is just a passing wind since PAPPys said that it is Malaysians right to choose their future. Or is this prevarication of uglier revelations to come from Dr. Mahathir re-opening of the 1MDB kleptocracy investigations?

What if it reveals LEE-jiapore was one of the willing conduit and accomplice of that money laundering AND ITS SILENT COVER-UP of crime events? The political and financial consequences of its damaging impact on our long earned pristine reputation as a global financial centre will be earth-shattering. Better pray and hope this is not the case.

If the contrary is true, the PAPpys pursuit of Workers Party municipal matters OF NO GROUNDS IN SUBSTANCE would make PAPpys whiter-than-white pretension utterly hypocritical of shameless unlimited – not much worst than Mau Ku Lau Su ignominy (the cats of the world all assembles and cry in inconsolable sorrow seeing a dead rat).

By then, would the PAPpys repeat the same prevarication of “closely following” or would they entire tribe and pedigree ALL DIAM DIAM DIAM?

THE BREVITY OF TWO WORDS – CLOSELY FOLLOWING – SPEAKS LOUDER and a lot more than what is NOT spoken or selectively spoken. Present tense was so confidently assured that the fallen Najib was going to be a “sure-win” bet just 4 months ago. In off the cuff boisterous mutual celebration of unconcealed optimism of a future election outcome, PRESENT TENSE spoke of Malaysia’s then forthcoming 14th GE praising publicly his idol of winning that race – a strange excursion into the politics and internal affairs of our neighbor.

Now that Najib has been disposed off the emperor’s rotational throne neatly by who-dares-win Malaysian bolehs, LEE-jiapore needs to “closely following” what is going to unravel in the months/years ahead and the return feedback loop of “favors” for not just unwarranted (publicly-broadcasted to journalists) betting on the wrong horse but also meddling in someone’s family affair.Malaysians are polite and discrete of no meddling in our internal affairs.

If there is any stain of evidence of cover-up of wrong doing of relevance to LEE-jiapore is reveal, a lot of firecrackers will be lit. And you can safely bet that the usual ECHO CHAMBER of “closely following” lyrics will not be sung publicly. The orchestra will drop to the loudness of mute silence and embarassed stupidity again. Difficult neighborly relations will prevail until the next cycle of Malaysian election.

It won’t be easy of Barisan National to stage a comeback. Their heavyweights are all corpses buried. Pakatan Harapan would have gained experience and solidification of processes in governance playing the same arm-twisting politics levelled against them in GE 2018.

3Gs has special talents of free smoke and pork soup arrogant preaching. It would seems that we haven’t learnt a thing after armoured fighting vehicles got imprisoned in Hong Kong.

PAPpys SHOULD NOT HAVE OPENED OUR BIG MOUTHS but simply smile, greet and send our good wishes to whoever occupy the throne across the Causeway – they will be courteously obliged to sit down and do cordial business with us to mutual benefits and gains.

  • What’s a good neighbor for?:

One moment they say let’s be neutral, none of our business.
Yes that’s the advice received from some elites.
    What rubbish!
Next minute they say they are closely following the developments.
    Signs of nervousness?
    What hypocrisy!
Of course you got to know what the heck is going on at our neighbors house.
If things are not right, as a neighbor it is our duty to assist and help in whatever way we can.
If our neighbor is in trouble it will definitely affect us whether we like it or not,
So stop the pretenses and bullshits from some quarters,
