Cleaners’ minimum wage: $1,060 – very low?

I refer to the article “Parliament: Ng Chee Meng proposes new committee to support older workers” (Straits Times, May 15).

It states that “As for low-wage workers, Mr Ng noted that while the Progressive Wage model has done much to alleviate hardship of low-wage workers in the cleaning, security and landscape sectors since it was introduced in 2012, there are other sectors with low wage growth.”

In this connection, according to the Ministry of Manpower’s  (MOM) web site – Progressive Wage Model  (PWM) Cleaning Sector – “If you have new service contracts that starts from 1 July 2017, you must use the following revised wages” – (at least) $1,060 for Group 1 – Office & Commercial – General/Indoor Cleaners, (and) Group 2 – F & B Establishment – General Cleaners”.

Isn’t a basic monthly salary of $1,060, including employee’s CPF still very very low?

…and the MPs and Ministers complain that their jobs are like holding two full time jobs while being paid hundreds of thousands / millions!

They ask for $XX,000,000 a year and yet do not see it fit to compensate sinkies appropriately. They think very highly of themselves that they are better than anyone else in the world.

Not so long ago a bit of hoohah was made over security guards’ pay. Not sure what the rate is now but I’m not surprised there hasn’t been too many articles written since. Out of sight out of mind you know.

And these idiots are still talking about addressing inequality. Ah ha ha ha ha ha, comedy time is frequent it seems.

When one economist proposed to inject a shock economy, our Sia Suay rejected his idea saying we already have a progressive model. It does not seem to be working, now somebody proposed a NEW tripartite arrangement. Aiyoh die lah now NTUC becomes the playground of the Army and the Police

Still living in their fantasy world that 1000+$ of minimum wage is a heavenly paid amount of salary. 30 years ago this sum may be enticing and healthy for most people. Today such minimum amount of wage is negligible after CPF deduction, pay for house, pay for daily expenses and bills. I suggest $2000 minimum pay.

$G does not follow supply-demand economics because supply is unlimited.
So any salary can be set since there will always be someone to do the job.

There is no law under TPP to say $G must be first. Under TPP no preference for local $G citizens need to be given.

So a salary of $1000+ may be too high. This is what 70% want. Remainder must accept democracy.

working 5.5 days per week, 8 hours per working day, $1060 + Employer CPF contribution will Give the cleaner $6.33 per hour, net after deductions comes to around $4.50 per hour take home pay. How many PAPPIES would work for that? Seems the government is so keen on charts and grafts why not do a comparison, adjusted by acknowledged cost of living index on a few professions, say, a bus driver, a train operator, a policeman, a mid-level chef, a grocery store worker, retail clerk and then the MP’s? We all know the findings but would be good to see and then laugh in the faces of the drive for equality cowboys.
